You guys do realize that $36k a year is higher than the median income in the US, right?

This. I live in a capitol city in Canada and 3k a month (US or CAD either one) would be more than enough to live in for me.

Back in my home state of Michigan I could buy a new house for $30,000. Rent for a 3 bedroom house on the lake was only $700/month.

But then you have to live in Michigan.

However you could live very comfortable there on 3k/month.

to people who say 3k a month isnt enough to live on, you need a fucking reality check

Kid, shut the fuck up. The cost of living is high in some areas of the US.

So move to a cheaper area. This isn't one of those "money but you can never move away" kind of deals.

Alright. Lemme just sell my house that I bought less than a week ago and find a new job. These are wise decisions.

Actually, you probably can't sell your house because that would constitute making money, no?

Which also sort of defeats the purpose of finding a new job, as well.

Well that seems even less appealing due to the large down payment I had.

You can do whatever you want with the money/property you already have. I didn't specify anything against that---just no earning more from it.

Whatever you get from selling your house you can keep. Just no earning more from it.

$3000 is pocket change.

Theres only so much netflix and videosgames you can consume. Its gets boring afterwhile.

I quit my job about month ago. Now im bored. I have enough finances to last for couple years without working and that got boring fast. idk what to do. Most of my friends are always working and im always here on CE engaging in pointless conversations like these.

I cant imagine not doing anything for the rest of my life. There's a thrill into making money. Even with petty things like cryptocurrencies.

If I have still had the option to make more money, I would take the 3000 . No option=dealbreaker.

There are many places in the south and midwest that aren't "**** holes".

If you're making good money in your expensive northern city, I suggest you retire or move to the south/midwest one day. A $1,000,000-$5,000,000 house in the south is like having a $30,0000,000 mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Except without the Hollywood.

I'm not sure what your guidelines are for **** hole, but yes, Austin is modestly large city, similarly to many in the south--Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, etc. All of these areas, including Austin, have gorgeous homes in the suburbs (NOLA a little bit different) where you can own a beautiful home in a wonderful area for a fraction of the cost you'd pay for the equivalent up north or Los Angeles area as an exception.

In Kansas City you could easily live on $3,000/month. My expenses for the month are:

Rent-$450
Car-$250
Internet-$30
Power-$75
Food-$400

I have a roommate so everything is in half basically. Thats only $1200. You could easily live here on that. Id still rather just keep my earning potential open.

Sure. I've lived on a third of that.
Inherited my house. All my bills together only come to under $400 a month. Own the cars. A couple hundred for food. Gas for cars. Car and home maintenance would come out of the savings.
There would be a ton left over.

But here's the thing. Even if I was making $10,000 a month. I can't see really changing anything about my life. Sure I could remodel my home immediately instead of little by little over the years. I'd buy a brand new black Toyota Tundra. But that's it. Money would be nice I guess. But I don't need that much and I'm not interested in putting in the effort to get to the point where I could.

I honestly do not get the need for a higher min wage, when honesty, it can be a 'livable' wage. Not a good wage, but livable.

It's actually an interesting question when you take into account that it's tax free and adjusts with inflation.

Here's a question though. If I were to run a business in my newly acquired spare time and I just poured all the profit back into the company, I'd be good so long as I don't take any of he money for myself, right?

Also, don't forget to take into account health insurance when you're tabulating your hypothetical budget.

No it isn't. It's enough to get by for sure, but not "comfortably." Not enough for a mortgage, groceries, gas, utilities, phone, and maintenance anywhere worth living. And you certainly can't support a family on it. Maybe if you marry someone with a good income you could live comfortably.

Maybe you guys and I have a different definition of "comfortably living." If you just mean "food on the table every night," then sure. But to me, "comfortably" means access to luxuries.

Those of you saying it's not a lot, I want you to look at your paycheck after everything is already taken out.

I made $62k out of college. However, after everything was taken out( taxes, 401k, etc), it ended up being a few hundred over $3k a month.

And I lived extremely comfortably.

Rent and utilities was maybe $1500. Food and other daily expenses were $500 or less. I was saving a minimum of $1k a month.

I have a feeling you guys are just thinking about this in comparison to your yearly salary. This deal means you don't need to pay taxes or save for retirement.

$36k a year isn't much, but it's doable here in Wisconsin. If I was forced to accept this I'd have to move back in with my parents for a year or so to build up savings and finish off paying my student loans.

After that, it'd be like $700 a month in rent, no car payment, and like $400-500 a month in other bills. It's definitely doable as a single dude, but if you add in a spouse and kids it becomes untenable.
