best mario game ever

had a total blast finding crazy ways to get to places like this before I was supposed to, acrobatic mario is best mario and this is the most best arcobaticest

I'd post all my koopa race vids but that would be overkill, but a fucking LOVE nailing a great koopa race time, Mario's just at his absolute best control-wise and that's always the best part about Mario

hell I'll post one

... watching that I realize how I could easily improve my time so god I know what I'm doing tomorrow, I also need to beat yoshi who took over my spot by like 10ms god dammit grr grr

oh and yes NDC's Mario tribute and the finale segment are 2 of the best scripted moments of the series

first was all tears and the second oh shit just so hype to kick ass as bowser spittin' hot fire to Sonic Adventure jams

laughed my ass off at Mario, Bowser & Peach being all friendly in the end, it's like Bowser capturing the princess is just a game they all have together

Got 500 moons and beat the bonus level, tried playing again but I have no desire anymore

I don't feel like I'll be playing this for 20 straight years over and over like I do with Mario 64. I can't place it but something is missing

It's still really good tho

The ability to set up pictures at whatever angle you want is the best part of the game. I love it so much, though I never think to do it in the heat of the moment, so I only have a few good ones that are choreographed.

https://twitter.com/MrSmartGuyB8/status/904262231701024768 Had to include this one.

My forte is finding dumb shit to do, though.

And then I orchestrated this my second time through:
https://twitter.com/MrSmartGuyB8/status/934745897442746368

By that time, I noticed I was actually getting really acquainted with the controls and was able to do some more technical stuff.
https://twitter.com/MrSmartGuyB8/status/934642021020483584

So I starting dabbling in the free runs. I have top 8000 times on every world, including a #224 on Bowser's Kingdom, last I checked. But that one was still over a minute long, so I wasn't able to record the whole thing, so I recorded my second-best one instead.

Yeah this game is like BOTW in that it is super tweetable. Nintendo seems good at that now. Tweets don't make up for lack of substance though.

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't really like Breath of the Wild.

Odyssey looks fun, but sounds kinda boring. Then again the only recent Mario game I've really liked personally was Super Mario Maker. (AKA Infinite 2D Mario)

BotW was a good romp but I have a hard time praising it when the vast majority of its open world is just empty space. Sure it looks nice and the sense of scale is grand, but compared to how big the world is there's very little of note to actually do. (Largely just find shrines and solve a handful of different types of seed puzzles.) Stuff like the shrine quests are really, really good but there's just not remotely enough of that kind of thing.

Odyssey goes completely in the opposite direction and makes every square inch of its levels relevant, which I find infinitely more impressive.

This so much

I'll take linear Zelda any day over "Open world but it's mostly empty and there's nothing to do"

I'm not a huge Zelda fan, but I actually liked the way it did it. Just going from shrine to shrine and tower to tower without having a billion collectibles is the way to go. Seeing a shrine or a tower and figuring out how to reach it was fun.

I liked Odyssey's density, too, but I think the main thing I appreciate about both of them is that they limit the amount of collectibles to basically just two things.

BotW had a much bigger ratio of fun/unique/interesting to shrine than Odyssey has to moons. It has issues involving the overworld becoming worthless once your weapons hit a certain level, but the game itself does so many things in such a right way that I can't complain too much.

Odyssey got a bit too crazy with collectathon, the ratio of lazy moons to good moons simply isn't great. I think its a great building block and a more streamlined sequel could be fantastic, but as it is the issues definitely weight it down.

BotW just got so many things right in letting you play the game in so many different ways, all of which feel quite meaningful. Odyssey has so many things you can do with Mario, but the meaningful part is rarely ever attached because too many moons lack challenge or thought.

That might be true BUT Odyssey's raw gameplay is so much more fun and interesting so it's not a good comparison. You could remove all the moons from the game and it would still be fun to just run around and jump on stuff.

Nah, just didn't realize he didn't like it either.

I just felt like the shrines were just boring, and you had to walk a LONG way between some of them. Wouldn't be so bad if they didn't start you with so little stamina. Or if they put some stuff between the things, or made the world a little smaller. Also would have helped if weapons weren't constantly breaking. I mean I'm fine with breakable weapons, but they break just a little too quickly.

but it's also fun in BotW to just fuck around and mess with stuff without worrying about advancing the narrative. Like yeah it doesn't have as strong a story as past Zeldas but it's more replayable. They're both the Grand Theft Autos of their series.

I'm loving it!

Biggest complaint by me is the "buy moons to top up your total."

I get it, they want accessibility, but I feel less accomplished even though I can buy 119 and then set my goal of 999. Small, personal issue!

Some moons are easy, some are sneaky, some are a little challenging. I think that's part of the design.

Eh most of the things you can do are both too punishing to have fun and too easy to feel accomplished. Cooking was the most fun sandbox but even that lost its charm pretty fast.

Eh, I'd disagree with this, since there's not really much side stuff to do at all. In the end, you're just doing the same shrines over again. It's not LESS replayable, but it's not really more, either.

Exactly, I was excited by the potential early on but it just fell flat. However, trying to make the most expensive dishes was still pretty interesting, but you quickly ran out of stuff to use money on so it was pointless.
