I actually knew people in high school that used to talk about it. What was it and what made it so special?

Board just like CE that had lots of memes and trolling but they also were so badly behaved (I think they vandalized like a teenage suicide victims social media profile) that CJayC eventually cut them off from the rest of the site. You had to be active and sign up to remain so since that date no new users can join. After that it was like a mysterious place where having account access was valued so trolling became a dangerous game. This may or may not be accurate but it was what I recall when I looked into it back in the day.

No idea what it's like today.

It was hilarious for its time. I remember reading through a topic about worst public fart stories and desperately trying to hold in my laughter since I was on the family computer.

If CE shut down, a major piece of my life would just be gone, as sad as that may sound. There are no replacements for this place. There are few surviving forums of this structure at all it seems, at least of ones that have useable interfaces without every post breaking the webpage with a dumbass "Banner"

Message boards and the internet as a whole weren't nearly as popular until social media took hold. When LUE was at it's peak it was when this site as whole attracted a fair bit of attention from basically anyone remotely into nerd culture. As a result you had a ton of people of questionable morality and little to no consequences all shooting the shit and would occasionally cause a lot of grief for the admin.

Then you had the spin off boards where people would be all pent up from obeying the TOU here that they would go crazy. Remember this one girl wanting to be a porn star and asking for opinion on how she looks, guys showing off their junk, shit like that. Amusingly no one really cared I recall yet you do anything remotely scandalous on CE and it hounds you forever.

Yeah you're right about that. Usually that's over the weekend though on weekdays I think they generally get to it same or next-day
