This isn't an adaptation of a comic book I've never read.

I own all of the classic Mario games. I've followed interviews from Takashi Tezuka and Shigeru Miyamoto and have a feel for their respective styles. I've viewed anything cited as a source of inspiration for the characters or their stories: Popeye the Sailor, King Kong, Journey to the West, etc. I know exactly how I would flesh out the characters and I more or less have a general idea of how I would structure the story.

First, I'd outline the story and in a manner comparable to something like Robin Hood or Indiana Jones, but more lighthearted in tone. Then I'd revise it to incorporate more elements of Mario. ("Hey, can we involve pipes in this escape scene?") Then I'd revise it again to give it a modern feel which is accessible to fans of films like Frozen or the Lego movies.

While the skeletal structure of the story would be that of the Mario that I grew up with, I'd have the wherewithal to to make sure that the meat of the story is what modern audiences would expect rather than reverting it back to the tone and characterizations from my childhood.

Caring about a franchise doesn't mean you know how to make it into a good movie. It really isn't a stretch that this movie will be made by a bunch of guys who grew up with Mario anyway.

Mario is a pretty shallow character. Which is fine. He's a video game protagonist. He doesn't need character development. I'm not entirely sure what exactly they can do with this.

I'm not sure if I can take Charles Martinet's Mario performance seriously for mundane dialogue and if they don't use him I'll be personally offended.

I can think of a half-dozen ways to characterize Mario. He's an easy character to flesh out because nobody expects anything from him.

For example, before Luigi's Mansion canonized Luigi as a coward, I would have based the dynamic between Mario and Luigi off of two of the characters found in the original King Kong. In that version of the story, the film producer who wishes to capture Kong (on film) is blindly optimistic, driven by a thirst for adventure, and able to talk most anyone into most anything. By contrast, the captain he employs to head the expedition is more of a realist. He's skeptical about the venture and has his reservations about both his employer's ambition and the probable danger.

I would have characterized Mario as someone would blindly set out to right a wrong just as soon as he got wind of it. On one hand, he's a noble hero looking to vanquish evil and set things right. On the other, he's a thrill-seeker satisfying a personal urge. By contrast, I would have characterized Luigi as someone who was not unsympathetic to the plight of those suffering under the likes of a Bowser, but he'd prefer to remain uninvolved out of practical self-preservation. Yet, he lets his brother continually talk him into these dangerous situations and follows him headlong into the fire -- not to save the kingdom, but to be there to save his brother Mario from himself.

But a subtle "please, let's not do this" attitude wouldn't work for Luigi when he's presented as an abject coward. So, I'd have to characterize both of them differently from how I originally would have if there'd been no such development for Luigi. That's just one of the ways that Mario and his brother could have been characterized.
