You get put in some rough areas where you'll have to make do without any creatures that have effective abilities AND good resistances against the foes early on. It gets easier later as you can fuse them. I never played 4 but the sequel is apocalypse and it's really rough. Instead of obtaining Personas after battles, you recruit demons (basically the same thing) in the middle of battles, and besides your MC & an occasional temporary party member in some games, all of your party members are recruits. Buffs/Debuffs are more permanent & you can apply more than just one at a time. There's still plenty of fusing demons - probably even more since your entire party is demon-based, whereas Personas only apply to your MC. Also, unlike Personas, some demons can evolve into stronger demons - kinda similar to Pokemon evolution. Despite my previous post ITT, I think the mainline SMT games are extremely good (Nocturne is one of my all-time favorite games); some of the fans are just kinda annoying.
