pai is 100% going to end net neutrality and the GOP senators are going to ignore your calls and/or read a script back to you about how theyve already accepted the bribes

but it's important to have made an effort

My loose understanding of it is that it'll give ISPs the ability to sell internet packages kind of akin to what cable companies are doing now. So you pay for a social media package that gives you access to facebook, twitter, etc and a video package that gives you youtube, netflix, hulu and so on

I could be way off the mark though

It's not. It's a good thing. That's why companies are trying to abolish it.

Basically, net neutrality means that when you buy access to the internet, you get access to the internet. Without it, service providers can adjust what you get access to and charge you accordingly.

Example: So if you want to access GameFAQs, you'd need to buy their Gaming Internet bundle, while if you want Youtube you'd need to buy their Video Site bundle.

That's what cell phone providers do in certain countries right?

I was in Nigeria and when I was buying a Sim card, they had various plans for data that were tailored to certain apps or features

I'm still not very sure either, granted I haven't been keeping track of it since...you know, Australia.

Imagine the internet is a government owned highway. There's 4 lanes. You can use all 4 lanes freely, and this system allows everyone to travel along at the same speed and quickly get to work.

Then a private company buys out the road. They close one of the lanes and slow down the speed limit for the remaining 3 lanes. Now everyone is stuck going at snail pace on their drive to work, and it's frustrating and shit for all.

Finally, they open up that last lane again to premium road users. They tell you that it's the fast lane, and if you want to pay a little extra you can use it. After all, it's a premium service so why shouldn't it be a premium rate?

That's this argument in a nutshell. And "free market" gurus will tell you this is good for business, because these private companies have your best interests at heart. But they don't, because fuck you.

Yeah, as I said with my other reply, it's....just no.

I can understand why companies want the to do that shit...but fuck off, no way.

Also I'm sure you remember Telstra from when you lived in Australia, but they do something similar like that with my (former) Cable, now NBN, where you pay for speed increases and shit (boosts, as they call them).
Even though my "fast" connection doesn't actually work atm...lol

Australia had easily the most embarrassing internet speeds I've ever experienced in the 1st world, so yeah I remember sitting on netflix trying to get a video to load and wondering why I was paying $70 a month for this shit.

They are also going to use it to black mail bigger sites like Youtube/Facebook to give them a cut or else they cut the speed. Pretty much there is almost no reason for net neutrality to be removed except these companies want to take their government monopolies and further use it to make more money for doing nothing else.

Net neutrality is the most blatant evidence that our government doesn't give a shit about its citizens and only wants to line their own pockets with money.

Getting rid of neutrality benifits literally no one except for ISP execs and whatever politicians are in their pockets.

Telecoms are shameless. They and their political stooges tried to pass a bill in California this year, stripping the public of their public rights-of-way. SB 649 would have given telecoms the right to install refrigerator-sized equipment on any city-owned property or vertical infrastructure (utility poles, street lights, commercial buildings) at a rental rate capped thousands of dollars below the per-pole market rate. Under the bill, cities would have had absolutely no ability to say "no" and no ability to negotiate the price. The bill was effectively a massive subsidy for an industry that's already fantastically wealthy due to its monopoly power.

Thankfully, our governor vetoed it. It was easily the most crass bill out of the thousand-or-so that made it out of the state legislature this year. Absolutely disgraceful.

Frontier, AT&T, and other major US providers don't own the entire internet backbone-- far from it. They meet with Canadian ISPs at a few major exchange points (e.g. Toronto). These exchange points are governed by international contracts (known as "peering agreements" or "transit agreements"). The FCC currently has zero involvement in these negotiations and these agreements usually involve a monetary exchange. Presumably, the termination of net neutrality will make US providers even more powerful, but it's hard to say what the measurable effects will be.

A host of other companies own the transoceanic cables to Europe and Asia. My guess is that they have way more leverage than the Canadian exchange point operators, but I don't know for sure. I doubt that Europe or Asia will see any change. And no way will any noticeable effect make it past the Chinese firewall, imo.

Ironically this is what FastTrak lanes are doing on actual freeways here in Southern California.

https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/02/04/regulate-internet-providers/dont-make-the-internet-a-public-utility

The important part:
Utilities, on the other hand, operate where it makes sense to have just one provider, because the costs of operating a second one are too high to justify the exercise. We regulate public utilities because they are, by definition, monopolies but the costs of regulation are high. Rather than business decisions being made in the marketplace, they are contrived by politicians and bureaucrats who are, in turn, influenced by the lobbying campaigns not just of the utilities but of everyone with a stake customers, suppliers and labor unions all get involved.

Therefore, the correct course of action is to ban "municipal franchise" ISPs as a concept. Possibly also cable companies.

Hell, just think about how much more competitive things would be if electricity and water weren't local monopolies.
