Accurate speech is important, identical generalizing statements with the subject of generalization changed shouldn't have different, hidden rules of how it is to be understood based on the subject.

Shut the fuck up you nerd. Words evolve and gains different meaning all the time. Language is, at its simplest, the way that we communicate, and so if I say something and what I say means something now that it didn't mean in the past, it's effectively changed by virtue of the fact that people know that I'm using the updated meaning.

Take the words, man, dude, boy, and brother, for example. They've all morphed into meaning the essential pal, buddy, comrade, and homie.

SJW evolved from strictly meaning "somebody who gets really passionate and confrontational about shit that doesn't affect or involve them" to "somebody who disagrees with what you say" within a span of a few months.

I'd say I'd feel bad about being generalised if I thought I was being generalised, but I know I'm not, so I don't.

This. I look at the way guys often act (especially here) and think "this is what women are talking about when they say men are trash. I'm glad I'm not like them most of the time."

Really? Because CEmen regularly say things like "Kids suck" or "kids are trash" and most of the time they mean "some kids are immature and noisy and I would like to go to a restaurant or fly on a plane without having my day interrupted by a screaming child." In that case it refers to specific behaviors by certain children.

Meanwhile you guys also say "Fat people suck" or "fat people are trash" and most of the time you mean "most of them are ugly and I can't stand the ones who blame their weight on anything other than themselves." Again, it refers to specific behaviors, and in fact they're DIFFERENT behaviors than the previous example.

Context matters. If you take every word literally (and ONLY literally) then you probably are dealing with some issues that make it difficult for you to understand normal, human interaction.

Why the fuck do you have to go this far to explain this to these nerds? They should already understand it.

Because in a lot of cases it's not just them being nerds. Some of them have zero interaction with people outside of written words on a monitor, or they have mental issues, and I'm trying to explain what real life is like or what standard human interaction is like. Maybe it's a waste of time, Iunno.

But I also think that guys are getting outraged more at the perceived unfairness of women being "allowed" to say this rather than any actual offense felt.

You see a similar thing about BET. "Why do they get to have a BET? If there was a WET there, would be outrage!"

I'll bring this up again, because That_Happened is correct (imo). Like are you guys actually aggrieved by this? As in do you feel personally affronted and marginalised by it? Or is it more just that they're getting away with something you wish you could get away with?

Context does matter. I never said it didn't.

My claim, to use your example, is that changing 'Kids' to 'Fat People' in no way changes the context that the word is surrounded by. Words do not bring context with them, that goes entirely against the idea of context.

If there was a problem of women actively treating men poorly in society and justifying it with the "men are trash" phrase then I think we could equate them on that basis. The thing is that when women say this they're exclusively talking about something unpleasant that has happened to them.

I'm equating them on the basis that someone who has had those experiences to form whatever narrow belief is as justified as a woman who had enough experiences to think men are trash, by your logic.

BigSLM1993 posted...
Like I tried to see her point, that maybe the straight people who are anti-LGBT suck, but I felt that phrasing it in a manner like that alienates your allies. And why bother speaking divisive if your goal is to build bridges and understanding.

And they're voiding any responsibility to the power of their words, and placing the burden of understanding on the listener, like it's their problem if they are misinterpreting broad generalizing statements.

Well said.

The point is that while not all men act this way, all women deal with men acting this way. We're not talking about an unfair prejudice but a real thing that all women deal with constantly in their lives.

Again, this is not about women thinking men are trash. This is about women talking about trash behaviour that is considered acceptable by men.

I imagine it's pretty frustrating for a lot of women when the only time some guys take sexist behaviour seriously is when they feel personally affronted by it, like in this topic.

The way this argument evolves over time is telling.

Woman: I was sexually harrassed.
Us: Don't worry about it he was just a creeper
Woman: I was sexually harrassed again
Us: That's horrible but some people eh? Just brush it off and grow thicker skin
Woman: I keep getting sexually harrassed. Why do men do this?
Us: Woaaah there little lady, let's not make blanket generalisations now, that's sexist you know?

As much as the #menaretrash meme is kinda hateful, I think it's also the natural byproduct of men just not giving enough of a fuck in the first place.

"Man the harpoons!"

"I don't date women with kids. They're usually looking for someone to play daddy"

"There's nothing wrong with telling a woman to smile. It's how my parents met"

"Sexual assaults against women in college is not as big of an issue as women make it"
"Modern feminism is a joke"

"They're aren't any real equality issues between genders"

"False accusations of rape are just as big of an issue"

And that just the crap I've seen here. I admit, I have to fight not to get defensive, but I get where women are coming from.
