Just went to office hrs and this asshat is the type of professor who just stares at you and can barely muster up the courage for even basic small talk. Had to go right into asking a prepackaged question about something in class to justify the visit, when I was really just trying to have a chat.

They call them social skills for a reason. It's something normal people develop!

A lot of professors just teach because they have to in order to have their research position so interacting with students isn't necessarily their forte

It's a skill. They should be forced to develop it, instead of being useless eggheads.

Their job is to be my friend though because we have to rely on professors for future recommendations in my field. It can't all be based on grades alone because no one writes a good recommendation that just says "Callixtus aced my exam".

skill is too broad a term. Being good at basketball is a skill. If you make me practice all day I still won't ever be skillful relative to people who are.

Not super relevant but maybe it is, you're argument does emphasize skill so...

They can comment on your attendance and punctuality without knowing you well, and how early or late you hand in any assignments you made.

The professor has already said he doesn't care about attendance because when he was in school he never showed up to class lol. Also it's law school so there is literally one assignment, the final.

They probably don't want to be your friend because they've dealt with those types of students that then want them to make exceptions and give them grades that they don't deserve. If they think you're a good student, they'll likely be perfectly fine with writing a recommendation for you.

What kind of idiot goes to a professor's office hours to make small talk and talk about nothing relevant to the course or profession? Probably the same idiot who got 20+ accounts banned on Gamefaqs within a two year span

I did ask a question about class and we talked about that for 15 minutes instead. But that's not the point of the office hours game in law school. The point is to get to know the professor, and all of the professors know that. So it's annoying as hell when they don't play along.

If you've only one assignment in one
of this professor's classes so far then he's probably not the right person to ask for one. What do you want the recommendation for?

That's how law school works. Most classes have little to no assignments and the class terminates with either a final exam or paper that are worth 90+% of the grade.

I need recommenders for judicial clerkships.

That's literally what they're for in law school. This isn't the scientific community where you're a genius and so professors want to work with you. In law school, you show up to a lecture with 70 students, the professor talks for 2 hrs, then you go home. There is no evaluation except the final. But it's also a profession where advancement is almost entirely based on your 1) school and 2) connections. Even grades are secondary to that.

It is absolutely a professor's job to get to know and promote students.

Law professors write law reviews and such. My guess is that there's an appropriate outlet that will get you personal 1 on 1 time with with a professor. You're going to get a shit letter if you're just around shooting the shit anyway.

It doesn't work that way. Professors don't always hire assistants for research, and often law review articles are around 100 pages and span several semesters, meaning your contribution is small. That's not the main outlet to get recommendations. It's by getting to know them and doing well in the class. And I'm already doing research for another professor. I'm talking about this one in particular however.

It doesn't really work that way in law school. The ratio of prestigious, or even relatively well known professors to students is exceedingly disparate. Few students get to collaborate with those professors, but you can be sure they're pumping out dozens of recs.
