is Ewan McGregor's line at the end of three: "you were the chosen one..." Such a chills inducing performance. If I had to pick one redeeming factor for the entire prequel series it would be the performance of that line.

Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid are pretty top tier actors to be able to give the halfway decent performances they did with the awful script Lucas wrote.

Unfortunately it was immediately followed up by the shitstorm of a line "you were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them! You were to bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness!"

Serious gutter trash writing there.

Yeah but his delivery was as great as it could possibly have been.

Yes. But the line should have ended after "You were the chosen one!" It says everything that needs to be said, and the emotion and emphasis on a very short line like that would make a much bigger impact than shoving exposition down the viewers' throats with the rest of it.

Agreed. Could have just stuck with "You were the chosen one" and "You were my brother, Anakin"

I'm convinced all of the bad acting in those movies is on the director. I mean, there are some legitimately great actors in all of the prequels, but none of them are great or even good consistently.

I think Lucas wrote a good story, but the devil's in the details... the dialogue doesn't come off as natural. Especially Anakin's.

One scene that turned me right off was in episode 1 when Anakin said "You'll never reach the outskirts in time... sandstorms are very, very dangerous. Come on! I'll take you to my place."

It is so... so unnatural. And it's not the actor's fault, the line is just completely out of place in the scene. I don't think there was any way to deliver it that wouldn't have made it sound like a recited line. That's just bad writing.

It's obvious in many scenes that the lines were just written on a computer like that, depersonalized, without enough thinking about the dynamics of the scene. Good writing makes recited lines sound improvised, because they're repeated and changed and fine tuned to fit the scene. But the way it's done it just sounds like "ok, writing's done, let's just shoot the scene with those lines."

It's like... imagine if you're going to deliver a speech to an assembly. You don't just write the speech and then read it off a teleprompter. You write it, then you read out loud to see how it sounds, then make little changes, then re-read it, etc.

I think an Obi-Wan movie has already been confirmed iirc, but not the casting. I feel like they have to go with Ewan, he was one of the only great things about the PT, and he put a lot more work into the roll than those movies deserved

I loved the whole scene. I don't think the writing in that scene is especially bad for some reason.

I mean it's the same series with "Strike me down and I shall become more powerful than you can imagine"

I wouldn't call Episode 3 great, but it was decent film following on the heels of the train-wreck that was Attack of the Clones, which managed to make something called "The Clone Wars" boring and inconsequential.
Also, so very little of consequence happens in Episode 1, which is a shame, because Darth Maul was legit.

I am ambivalent on the prequel trilogy. First thing I would say is that they should of never bothered with the first movie. Not one cared about Jar Jar or following the kid around, nor the excessive amount of politics it was a mistake and they should have just started when Anakin was all grown up.

As for the plot line, I thought there was a good scaffolding to expand on. I liked the Jedi council, the clone armies, the droid armies, how Palpatine was just playing the sides, order 66 and Anakins decent in to the dark side, sans that horrible Vader scream at the end, but the actual execution left a lot to be desired. It was mostly a problem with casting. Hayden Christiansen just seemed, so emo the whole time and his onscreen chemistry with the other actors including his love interest were virtually non existent. He just seemed to be a horrible lead.

The Clone Wars tv show solved a lot of these problems by actually having a likable Anakin as well as other interesting characters and went a long way into improving my opinion on the prequel trilogy.
