If I'm not enjoying it by the end of episode 3, is it worth it to try and stick it out?

probably not. You're almost halfway through it and you gave it a good go. If it hasn't grabbed you by then, then it won't later.

Pacing is extremely slow for my tastes. Also can't really get into the Eleven storyline. And the teenagers are all virtually useless and just not interesting to me in the slightest.

Yeah I never cared too much about the children outside of Eleven. Nancy/Steve and the adults interested me more.

Honestly I just liked the cast as a whole more rather than individually (exception would probably be Joyce- can't deny me some Winona), which is why the last few episodes really work for me.

Char preferred the sheriff to the kids too. I rather liked the internal conflict between the younger cast, but yeah the teenagers don't really improve and the pacing is pretty consistent so it's likely not for you.

I'd give the first season an 8 out of 10 personally.

joyce and hopper are easily the two best characters, but if you dont care about any of the kids or teens by now then yeah maybe drop it

I liked all of the characters but Joyce was my favorite

Their plotlines remain the best, but the teens end up getting a lot better. For the first three episodes their role is really unfocused but starts to make sense later. So you might change your opinion on them.

On the other hand, I didn't care for Eleven either. That whole plot basically stays exactly as cliche as you'd expect for the whole season.

I had similar feelings on the characters and story early, and while it never quite clicked for me in the "this is awesome" sense, I did end up enjoying it and thought the pacing got significantly better after the first two episodes-- I basically sat having only watched two episodes forever, then once I got past four I basically watched all the rest in pretty short order.

I'm not sure after three is the time to drop it. After four definitely is, though. And I feel like if after the third episode you weren't at least intrigued into watching the fourth then it probably is safe? I dunno. I'm kinda hazy on when exactly it clicked for me (to the extent it did, anyway) but I do think it was during the 4th episode.

Not really a must watch in any case if you're still skeptical right now. It's a show I don't regret watching and will watch the next season of, but if you're a busy man who has a lot of things he's enjoying watching already then probably not really a big deal.

Read episode synopses and yeah 4th episode was definitely the first one I thought was pretty good-- 3rd was mostly "just good enough at hooking me that I wanted to watch episode 4 before dropping," so yeah if you're in this far might as well give it one more just to see if it hooks you.
