It's because this generation is so busy smoking pot and pirating music that they've failed to actually do anything with their lives. Their labels are all they have to identify themselves with, because they don't actually do anything at all. They work shit jobs at coffee shops and Wal-Mart and bitch about how good everyone else has it and talk about privilege all day.

People have always cared about what they call themselves, but there's certainly a larger quantity of labels that people identify as now. There's a lot of reasons; but the short of it is probably that the shrinking of the world, the uniformity of life in developed nations, the rapid nature of modern social movements, and the connectivity of the digital/social media era have basically created a more immediate need to both be seen as unique and to find a group one can fit in with. It's turned into a breeding ground for labels.
