Asylum has been the best season so far. It's where AHS really starts to do a lot of unconnected plot lines, but this is the season where it works the best.

Coven is sewage thrown on a dumpster fire, skip it.

A lot of people hate Freak Show, but I liked it.

Hotel isn't bad; it's more mediocre than anything else.

I personally really liked Roanoke. It had some issues (could have just cut the final episode, for instance), but I enjoyed it. However, a lot of people don't.

Cult is looking alright to me so far, it's just fucking hilarious more than anything else.

Asylum was awesome for the themes. It has some really great scenes (I LOVE the Name Game >_>) and a few good subplots.

I really enjoyed Coven just because of the soundtrack, setting and characters, but it was more of a story about Witches and Hoodoo than an actual horror story of any kind. The American folklore in there is really rich and they draw on real historical events as well. But yeah, if you watch it, it's better to approach it not as an AHS season, but as a miniseries about witchcraft in the 21st century >_>.

Freak Show is really slow and really doesn't take off until the middle of the season. Characters are enjoyable, but I felt like it lacked the kind of depth that the other seasons have regarding character development throughout the season.

Hotel was pretty fucking cool for the amazing characters and plot twists. I think this is probably one of my favorite seasons up there with Asylum.

Roanoke was hot garbage. I think by this time they wanted to mix up the format of the show a bit (to move away from the "let's introduce a new character every episode, then lay down some back story for an existing character, then have a couple things happen in the stories we're telling" mechanic that's very apparent in every season). But they did a really pisspoor job of doing it imo, which makes it fall entirely flatly on its face. It kind of sucks because there is some really good imagery in this season, and the concept wasn't terrible, but... they failed the execution on it so badly.

I loved Coven, the rest have been terrible. Hotel is particularly awful.

Don't know what to say if you didn't like Hotel. Interesting characters (Liz Tyler was great, I didn't even recognize the actor for several episodes), great soundtrack, great mix of individual stories being portrayed which I think is really well done considering it's a hotel and that's the kind of thing you'd expect from a transient place of residence with so many guests coming and going.

How you gonna think Roanoke is garbage and then praise Coven

my god

I said Roanoke had the best imagery in the series but other than that they had an opportunity to really mix things up and they just bombed it.

Coven had the opportunity to be good to really not be a skidmark and they just bombed it

Lmao.
Coven was a typical AHS season with the typical AHS format. Don't get me wrong, I love that, and I love how they tell stories through that format.

But Roanoke was a breakaway from that format. And if they were going to do something new, they should have committed entirely to it. If you're going to have a show about a "real life" haunted house experience, then you should hire no-name actors or even just regular ass people to play the role of the ... regular ass people. And you should start generating hype for it ahead of time (I would even have said a year out at least), instead of waiting for a month ahead of the release of the season to start playing really vague teasers that don't reveal anything.

It was a typical format, but it was terribly written compared to AHS' usual quality. Which is astonishingly bad because AHS is rather poorly written most of the time.

Hell, I haven't watched it since it aired and I still remember plot holes.

The horror of AHS (oddly) is terrible. They explain too much and it makes it not scary. What it does well is acting and good interactions.

I don't care that Coven isn't scary, none of AHS is scary. I care that Coven is terribly written.
