So approaching people gives you anxiety. Then have anxiety. Have a full blown panic attack. The next time you do it you'll have less anxiety cause you're better at it. You can't die from a panic attack

not a disease. a disorder. and I don't know that it works that way. I've had my entire life to try to get better at it, and I'm still unable to just walk up to strangers

but I don't break out into a panic attack usually.

Its something that can take years to overcome. I've done it but it took me ~6 years to get to where im at now. Years of therapy, medication and constant social interaction. Building up my self confidence was definitely key. I make sure I do something social fairly often as i find it keeps those feelings stifled for the most part.

This.

One severe issue with a lot of people is arrogance regarding us as a species. We're fragile creatures - it isn't difficult for something to fuck us up. It doesn't help anyone to pretend these problems aren't really problems.

You're trolling but that's actually a part of the therapy. Doing it solo is not though.

I just hate that so many people self diagnose themselves. Just because you don't like approaching strangers doesn't mean you have anxiety. Just because you worry a lot about college doesn't mean you have anxiety. If you have a diagnosed case, by all means carry on getting treatment, but the people who have never seen a therapist/psychiatrist in their lives need to stop trying to wear a disorder as a badge of honor.

Yeah real weird who people who are anxious to talk to others don't always make therapy appointments. Can't believe they'd have the audacity to feel anxious without hearing it from someone else.

Yet the same people I'm talking about seem to have no problem sharing the details of "their disorder" in a social media post.

Social anxiety is a mental disorder, not a disease, and it's much more serious than you're letting on. I should know, because I have it. It makes pretty much any interaction with anyone not in my family way harder because I'm constantly nervous and constantly dreading having to talk to people. It's not a very light feeling either, it's an overwhelming feeling of worry and dread that starts even on my days off before I go in to work. And that's not even going into how it effects how I talk to people, because I trip on my own words a lot.

I don't think you realize how serious it is.

Yep, this is how I feel as well

Should probably be, kinda the only empirically valid behavioral intervention.

I mean, CBT is a large umbrella, of which exposure therapy, and its various forms, fall under.

As far as I know, all empirically validated behavioral interventions for anxiety have some form of exposure. But, this isn't really my field, so I could be off here.

Fewer people had social anxiety when it was less commonly discussed. I am not saying it's not legit, but the power of suggestion is what I think has led many people to having things such as "add."

When I was a kid, there was no fidgeting and fucking around in class, because a teacher would humiliate or berate you in a way that traumatized every kid in the class for life.

There is no discipline anymore. Everybody's scared to get sued, so they can't even TELL a kid that he's done wrong unless it crosses a criminal level. If you can't hit them and the parents won't punish them, what else can you do? You tell me.

I saw it happen enough to learn vicariously through their mistakes. It often had to do with not using the words "sir" or "ma'am." To this very day, I NEVER respond with "what?" or "yeah." because I've seen the teachers make examples out of kids for being disrespectful. If you made it to the disciplinarian, that means you were almost criminally bad.

Our generation wasn't perfect, but I like these new kids, we are at least capable.
