There were recurring themes/stories and callbacks throughout the season, but each episode stood on its own and didn't really require you to watch any others. The first few seasons had a arc with Mr. Garrison being charged for being a pervert and trying to pick up Cartman that had him being replaced for a few episodes and him being demoted to kindergarten teacher and they still had their main 'crazy stuff' going on.
