Yeah, it's 600 for a one bedroom around here. And that's usually in a really bad area.

And it's not even like I live in a really affluent area or anything.

You've gotta live like a millionaire on food stamps to even afford a 2 bedroom in the bay area if you're going it alone.

It's a general consensus among the educated that minimum wage has not kept up well with inflation.
The argument against that has always been "minimum wage is not meant to support yourself/your family".

Meanwhile, corporations seek more part-time help due to the cost of benefits as opposed to full-time positions, so higher paying full-time jobs are harder to come by. Higher paying jobs than even full time positions such as managers and corporate positions are even scarcer due to the structure of organizations (only one manager is needed to supervise a group of "grunts") and may even require college educations...and I don't even want to get started on America's higher education loan structures.

What I don't understand are all the people who cry and whine that the bay area isn't affordable, but also don't want to commute. There are lots of places where people commute 45 minutes or longer each way for work, but anything more than 15 is completely unbearable for the bay area?

The fuck are you talking about? plenty of people commute from in and out of the bay area. Some have way longer commutes. Pretty sure 45 out in the East Bay is like an average commute

You're assuming people don't already do that. I work with dudes who make 1-2 hour commutes. My own grandparents used to do the same.

someone making minimum wage shouldn't be able to afford an apartment on their own, IMO.

heck, i had a hard time affording a place on my own (and saving what i expected) when i was making $48k right out of college.
