I'm a fan of all the above. From 90's guys like mxpx and Lagwagon, to current wave like Wonder Years and Four Year Strong.

Imaging being so stuck up your own bunghole that you expect people to have a clue what pop punk is, let alone hate on it.

I actually miss pop punk. It was a lot more wholesome and fun than the current equivalent which I guess is the wannabe hipster garbage where you take a very generic song and just give it some "unique" instrumentation like mandolins and xylophones and a whole bunch of "woah oh woah oh oh oh"s.

Most of what I've heard is just boring. The singers usually sound too whiny, and the music itself doesn't really do much for me. I'd rather just listen to older pop punk, hardcore punk or post-punk.

The only time a song turns me off is the voice of the singer.

But yeah, I usually listen to older post punk and ska punk

When they started they were considered Pop Punk (and yes they still are), but there's an actual name for that genre now:

Melodic Hardcore

Stuff like Chunk No Captain Chunk, Four Year Strong, etc.

is there a new punk goes pop album out yet? I wouldn't otherwise listen to a lot of the bands typically featured on those but I'm a sucker for covers of pop music, although I didn't really know many of the songs on the last album.

Pop punk? That's a contradiction.

It really isn't. As someone that played in a pop punk band and prefers punk/pop punk to any other genres, punk already used pop chord progressions from the start. That's why doo-wop songs instantly become punk when sped up. Case in point:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t_mt6hTzk8

If it uses a pop music chord progression, it's not far removed from pop in the first place. Proof: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I–V–vi–IV_progression
That's why the whole punk vs pop punk debate was ridiculous to begin with. The Ramones used the same exact chord progressions Blink-182 uses to this day.

But doesn't all that go out the window when you consider pop and punk stand for two very different things?

EDIT: sorry. I misunderstood what you asked. Just forget the name pop and what it stands for. Basically the pop in the title is there because the message is especially appealing to young people.

Original post:

But do they? Both stand for not fitting in. Punk in culture as a whole, pop punk in youth culture. Both are about being rejected and celebrating how different you are from them.

It's just that in punk, "them" usually means the government, or the status quo. But in pop punk, it could mean pretty girls, your parents, the cops, and the government too. Pop punk is just more inclusive, but both began as a celebration of youth culture and the "us vs. them" mentality.

Punk will always be about being different.
