Try doing that in Cincinnati. The last time a pro sports team has advanced in the playoffs was 1995. 1995!!!

I definitely weigh it based on who the other team is though, tbh.

Like, I know someone from Nebraska who is a Packers and Steelers fan. Picking two consistently good teams who aren't close to you is serious bandwagoning.

Yeah, Cincy isn't my hometown but it's the closest, so I go with them for sports. :(

Most children probably chose whichever team had a cool nick name. In my country, in rugby, When I was 6 I started following the Balmain tigers because I liked tigers. when I was old enough to realise they were located hours away from me after 3 years of pain, glory, crying when they lost etc it was too late

I think everyone should be allowed one cheat team if all their local teams are trash. There should at least be a good college team in some sport within reasonable distance of most people.

What about if someone used to live somewhere and kept rooting for that city's teams even after they moved somewhere else? I still cheer for the Miami teams that I liked when I was a kid growing up near Miami, even though I live in St. Louis now.

Baseball: Cardinals and Marlins
Hockey: Blues and Panthers
Football: Dolphins and Steelers
Basketball: Heat and Bulls

I also sort of cheer for the Chiefs since they're the closest team to me now that the Rams left. But a lot of my family (including my mother, god rest her soul) were Steelers fans too, so I decided to make them my second instead.

I would also accept rooting for a local person on a professional team far away. Like if you live in bumblefuck and some dude from bumblefuck plays for the patriots I will give you a pass

I assumed TC means the "where you were raised" version of hometown, not the "where you are currently living" one.

I used to low key root for the Cardinals because of Rashad Johnson. He's from my hometown of like 1,800 people and we used to play Tekken together back in the day (his dad and mine are friends and we'd play whenever I went with him). Dude's a hometown hero. Shame he isn't on a team now

Cowboys 4 life though. Always have always will

That starts to get dicey. Rex Burkhead played at my alma matter (UNL), but if I started cheering for the Patriots because of him, it seems more like I'm looking for an excuse to cheer for a winning team.

I know this isn't exactly the type of local that you meant, but yeah.

Is that not what hometown means?

I mean for me growing up

Giants/sharks/niners were the big three.

Warriors light weight but the NBA tended to be more about stars than team loyalty so go warriors but also go Duncan.

Now college football has always been notre dame for no real reason other than my uncle liking them.

And the last few years i haven't rooted for the niners. I swore I wouldn't root for them until that scrub cap and scumbag Harbaugh were off the team (note this was before the protest which I don't have a problem with it was just that Kaep was never going to be anything but a gimmick qb and Harbaugh has no loyalty and replaced Smith during his best year due to an injury).

Dhring that period I rooted broncos and chiefs for smith/Manning.

Im now a niners fan again this year.

As a long time Detroit sports fan, I can understand picking up another city's team.

Lions
Wings
Tigers
Pistons

None have had a great run as of late. Tigers trading JD and JV pisses me off

*shrug*

I'll continue sleeping peacefully at night. I'm not the slightest bit interested in the Sens, especially recently, and living nearest to their home arena doesn't change that.

I do like the 67s, though. Or I did when I followed the OHL.
