I do it out of the kindness of my heart but my gf just told me now that i'm "supposed" to do it because it's the guy's job to provide

I'm not "supposed" to do anything for anyone other than my child IMO

It should always be my choice whether to spend money on my gf or not even though we live together

You should spend enough to show you care enough to make some sacrificies for her, but "providing" for someone in an ongoing sense (and not just in case of misfortune where she has no other option, like being laid off or injured) is not a mandatory thing for another adult in this age in America. But some people don't have the same values and societal expectations, especially if they're from other cultures. Ultimately, it's your decision to make, but you're not in the wrong if you demand that you maintain separate finances or split costs equally.
