How could we possibily know if our credit is affected, ehat does freeezing it accomplish. What if you still like to use your credit card

This is the official site to see if you are effected, from Equifax:
https://trustedidpremier.com/eligibility/eligibility.html

It will also let you enroll in their credit monitoring system free for 1 year if you are.

A credit freeze, to my knowledge, only freezes opening of new lines of credit. It does not effect your ability to use your current lines of credit.

If it says we weren't impacted, based on that link, I don't have to do anything else right?

Correct, however you should be paying attention to your credit profile anyway.

i think the real issue is other things like bank accounts.

a scammer could open an account in your name, write a bunch of bad checks and the bank will go after YOU for their money.

or open phone accounts

or anything really.

but again, its identity theft so itll be easy to get off your report (though a hassle) so it's not TOO bad.

What if the whole thing was an elaborate marketing ploy

I mean, that could be why they're offering a one-year trial of their credit monitoring program or whatever it is

GRANTED, it's possible that Equifax actually used "test" and "123456" as their own testing to see if it works, like maybe they put in a dummy account or something. But still, I'd say that's reaching.

Well that's precisely what they did. Anyone who doesn't consider themselves morally bankrupt or a joke would send a letter notifying everyone whose data was breached.

You don't get to take information that was given to you, willingly or otherwise, and then not tell me when that info was compromised.

It's likely a test entry, or possibly the tool defaults to may be impacted if it doesn't explicitly know.

The bright side is that certainly not everyone will be truly affected.

There's only a limited number of scumbags that are going to use people's information to commit identity theft/fraud. Though there's a lot of scumbags out there, it's not hundreds of millions.

You're ignoring the fact that this information can potentially be used for the rest of your life. It's why everyone is lambasting the 1 year protection that Equifax is offering.

More protection is better, there's no reason not to. Equifax has cleared up the ToS thing, saying the arbitration and class-action clauses don't apply to the "cybersecurity incident" as they are putting it.

I may have been affected, fantastic.

The worst part of all this is that nothing will change. Equifax knew about the hack back in May, bribed Congress to pass laws to protect themselves before going public, and three Equifax executives sold their shares before the story broke.

And nothing will change, nobody will go to jail. Our country is corrupt and we need to fight back for our rights.

I believe so, yes.

The freeze is definitely the safest way, but it's kinda a pain and may cost money in some states.

I am perfectly satisfied with credit karma, that will let me know if anything I haven't done personally is happening.

Just pay attention to your credit karma reports. IF anything happens that you didn't authorize takes steps at that time.
