......a joy ride, to a drive through to get something to eat to be exact. I thought this stuff was way overblown and you only read about stuff like this happening.

My dad has owned a car repair and upholstery shop for decades. It's not actually a big deal, honestly. If a car gets repaired, the mechanics generally do need to take it out for a short drive to make sure everything's working as it's supposed to and the repair worked. My dad would frequently use their lunch break to do that. "I need to test this car, and someone needs to go pick up our lunch, so I'll take this car to go pick up our lunch."

Now if the car was in for cleaning or detailing instead of repair work, then yeah that's a bit ridiculous and the guy was just trying to drive around in a sweet car for a day. And that's bullshit. But if it was for repairs, then the car does need to be checked when they're done to make sure it's working again. The company's statements are probably just a bunch of bullshit to appease the customer and get ahead of the PR problems, but the guy isn't likely going to actually face much punishment if anything.

only the nice cars probably. Did you guys read something about how some new nicer cars have a "valet lock" or something? Iiirc it's some kind of a thing to prevent this from happening. Don't even remember how it works.

I test drive cars daily but wouldn't take them to get food. I understand "killing two birds with one stone" but it just looks extremely unprofessional and isn't worth it.

Especially with a car like that. Much higher chance of the person being anal about their car (which is understandable).

No but that's really interesting. I'll have to read into that. This was like 2006 at the latest though.
