It's also worth pointing out the number of ways punk (in some form) and metal (in some form) overlap.
Crossover thrash
Grindcore
Deathgrind
Metalcore
Deathcore
etc.

(Keep "those aren't metal" replies to yourself - I don't care for bullshit.)

Punk is an abomination, and is a much narrower genre than Metal. there are so many different kinds of Metal, it is mind boggling. one can be into one kind of metal without being into 5 others. not true with Punk. you're pretty much either into Punk or not.

Pretty much. Punk's main musical divisions are Pop, Hardcore, and Skate. And the hardcore stuff can easily devolve into some drug addict screaming incoherently into a mic and then trying to rape someone. Yes really. Look up GG Alin. Guy was insane. Most of the other divisions are along philosophical lines, whether they sing for communism, or environmentalism.

That's not true at all. Punk actually boils down to (as we mentioned before); Celtic, Horror, Hardcore, Emo, Pop, Skate, Street, Oi!, Rockabilly/Psychobilly, Dance, etc.

Yes, GG Allin was insane (though I don't think he was ever convicted or charged with rape), but he hardly represents the entirety of punk. Not all punks do drugs (Straight Edge is huge in some circles). Not all punks are left wing (Lee Ving and one of the Ramones were conservative, IIRC) and some are even apolitical (The Misfits, most of Horror Punk, Ska Punk is mostly too) and some are more 'working class' (Celtic, Oi! and Street punk in particular). Not all punk is incoherent screaming (not sure where you even get that from; even the most common place bands such as NoFX and Bad Religion have very clean vocals).

Punk is more about attitude than actual musical sound, unlike metal. It mixes so freely because it's more about attitude and energy. You can't really pin it down to any fashion, or band, or philosophy because there is probably a band that reflects each one and is considered 'punk'.

That's just plain not true. Off the top of my head; Horror Punk, Celtic Punk, Oi!, Street Punk, Psychobilly, Crust Punk, Hardcore, Dance Punk, Post-Punk, etc.

Yup!

People are looking at this, and thinking only of the pop punk filth of the nineties and early aughts. Let's get back to our roots. The Ramones, the Cure, the Clash, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and the bands they inspired.

Then there's the post punk revival of the end of the millennium that arose as an artistic rejection of commercial and vapid pop punk of 1997-200X. The Dismemberment Plan, Interpol, The Killers, The Strokes, The National, LCD Soundsystem, and the rock genres that grew from that.

Then there's the fashion, the media reaction, and the politics. Frankly, metal doesn't seem anywhere near as artistically deep or rich as punk. I can't see how we're even putting these two ideas on the same level as one another.

There's just as much variation in punk as in metal.

lolno. metal subgenres are so complex and branching that it's become a meme. punk may have some variance, but nowhere near the amount that metal does.

Everything from the Sex Pistols to Descendents to TSOL, Texas is the Reason to Moss Icon, Fugazi to Streetlight Manifesto, etc. It's all considered punk and it all sounds unique.

i googled these bands and some of them are emo, hardcore, post-hardcore. that's not punk. good job trying to over-represent your position though.

Those are all subgenres of punk you dope.

Metallica has at least 4 GOAT tier albums with an arguable 5th so I don't understand why people always use Metallica as a scapegoat of not being a real fan of metal or not liking good metal. If you don't like their first 4 albums I don't know how you can even call yourself a fan of metal tbqh.

And Iowa is a classic >_>

Punk. It gets to the point and doesn't bore me with 7 minute songs.

wow, ADHD much?

That's part of it. I generally just don't like music dragging on. I don't want to hear a song build up for 5 minutes when it could have built up in 30 seconds. I prefer my music to get to the point. Nothing against metal, I prefer it to most types of music. It just loses out to punk.

One of the best punk songs ever is 18 minutes long
