Knack 2 is an entertaining platform game like those of yesteryear. It's been created with due care and attention. Sure, it's old fashioned, and its story is appalling. But it's a reminder that the character-led platform combat game is still alive and well. Despite its good looks, it's more a work of engineering than it is a work of art. But, as my kid said to me after we'd mashed our way through a co-op level, it's kinda fun.

Knack 2 is lacking in a number of areas, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. The pacing is spot-on, the combat satisfying and the gameplay varied. Co-op is genuinely good fun too, and most definitely the best way for younger gamers to get into the action. Knack 2 is definitely a step up from the original, then, but until the writing and characterisation improve drastically, it's not going to be a true first party titan.

I'm actually a bit worried about Destiny 2 reviews. Destiny 1 reviewed super well initially but then almost everyone ended up thinking worse of it later. Now Destiny 2 has an air of pessimism going in making me wonder if it'll review worse even if it's technically better.

Destiny reviewed super lukewarm to start. You can't review much worse than in the mid-to-low 70's.

I think he's talking about the gaming press, not people in general? Destiny 1 got way more hype from the media than Destiny 2 is getting.

Gaming press turned hard on the first game. Almost every major high score reviewer came back months later chastising the game.

And yes, the prerelease hype is also a different beast. Don't see a lot of people who give a shit that Destiny 2 is coming out. Destiny 1 was being hailed as the second coming for video games, a revolutionary release that would change the genre forever.

To be fair to LtM, there was a wave of initial optimism, especially after the beta which then quickly turned into negativity, including in reviews.

Destiny 2 looks like it could go either way. It seems like a kind of a last chance for them.

The top 3 selling games for 2014 were CoD, Madden, and Destiny. And that was the year a Smash Bros came out, so.

Pokemon may oust it out of the top 3 if CoD and Madden hold their spots, but I doubt Mario will, and Fifa certainly not. NBA may, though, too. But CoD fell out last year, too, so who knows.

I'd be surprised if Destiny isn't top 3 or atleast damn close, atleast.

In the US! Fifa is substantially larger than Madden worldwide. I also forgot to mention Battlefront II, which will outsell Destiny.

Also there's the Watch Dogs problem. Watch Dogs outsold Destiny's first month worldwide by almost two million yet the sequel failed. Because the first game wasn't very good. That could hurt Destiny 2. I don't think it is a guaranteed smash hit by any standard.

What does last chance mean? Last chance for who? For Bungie to what? It sounds like you're talking like it's Bungie's last chance to retain players.

Destiny 1 had 30 million players and retention for new content was always high. Pre-orders are tracking ahead of Destiny 1. I don't know if Destiny 2 will overtake PUBG lifetime sales by the end of the year, but the top 3 will undoubtedly be Call of Duty, PUBG and Destiny 2.

If Mario outsold Destiny 2, Bungie would be out of a job.

Total players has always been a pointless figure when talking about sales or even current players. I am also feeling very bullish about Odyssey's sales but I won't go into my reasoning now.

Also, PUBG is selling extremely well but it's sold what, four million in four months? I have a hard time seeing it entering the 15-20 million range any time soon. Maybe very long term. Even then, I dunno.

The Nintendo Switch is north of 5M worldwide. Nintendo's internal expectations have the Switch at 13M sold WW by March 31st, 2018 if they can meet manufacturing demand.

Anyway, I am thinking long term for Odyssey. 15 million should be a realistic shout, if not higher.

Of course, the Switch is going to be well well above 5 million by now anyway, and it is consistently outpacing Nintendo's estimates.

So if Super Mario Odyssey sells 15M, it will be the only 3D Mario game to do so. The best-selling original 3D Mario game to date is Galaxy on the Wii (12.75M), although 64 is at 23M if you include both the original and remake (12M and 11M, respectively).

Wrong on two counts. First, PUBG sold 6 million in two months. Second 4.7 million to the end of JUNE, not July, when the figures were announced. The Switch has sold well over 500k in Japan since then, and the Japanese sales have been about 20% of the total, so...

Total Switch sales are probably in the 7-7.5 million range now.
