However, this is all sudden, and is supposedly to be revealed on the 19th. It is supposedly a Switch competitor, that is also backwards compatible with the PS1, PSP, and PS Vita.

I call absolute bullshit on that rumor, since rumors of new consoles comes roughly one year or more before it they officially revealed, and the entire internet, instead of acting surprised, all checks to see which rumors are legitimate, and which ones weren't.

Remember about a year ago when Nintendo officially unveiled the Switch, and the entire day was simply validating what we knew for over a year?

Despite the fact that the PS Vita has the highest ratio of games per console for ANY system?

The only way I see that happening is if it's a portable PS4 that can plug up to a tv. But it'll be hard to pull of a design as good as the Switch. It'd be hard to manage weight and balance without just copying the Switch. And I would think they'd wanna keep the DS4 around so it'd probably be something you plug onto the controller.

I don't see another portable from anybody happening after what Nintendo pulled off with the Switch (which sucks because at least Sony or Microsoft could handle putting out a steady supply of games).

They jacked themselves up with those card prices. Otherwise the Vita is an impressive machine.

Sony is the reason the Vita failed. To have better success with another handheld they would need to have learned all the lessons that led to the Vita's poor state, and there are no signs that point to them having done that.

If anything, there's a sadistic glee in wanting to see how badly Sony screws it up this time.

If it's cart-compatiable with Vita, and uses commodity microSD cards, I'm almost certainly buying one - definitely if there's a UMD drive also.

Sony should focus on the PSVR as that seems to be going the way or the Vita.

I have a ton of PSP games I can't play cause they are in disc format, and some of my students broke my psp (never been motivated enough to try and get it fixed).

If they released a handheld that was backwards compatible with those discs, I would buy it though.

The biggest reason why Sony handhelds always have trouble as far as I can tell are their proprietary memory cards.

I thought it was due to marketing.

You know, like how the Vita was marketing as "console quality gaming on the go", despite everyone knowing damn well that consoles were aging horribly at that time, and everyone and their mother knew that the PC version was a full generation ahead (even as far back as Crysis 1, which released nearly 10 years ago, but fully reaching its stride by the time Crysis 2, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Battlefield 3 continuing to rub salt in the wound).

So, if you think that horribly aging hardware is "quality gaming", then be my guest. Just don't delude yourselves that everyone else thinks so.

Vita died before it started, for several reasons. Marketing wasn't really one of them

Grossly-overpriced memory cards.
PSP "compatibility" is download-only, but only some PSP games can even be downloaded.
3G locked to AT&T.
Content Manager sucks.
Remote Play never really panned out, and ended up mostly abandoned and litigated.
The mystery port that was going to be video-out, but never was.
PS2 Classics support was incredibly obvious, but Sony never bothered.

Not to mention being fundamentally at odds with the handheld niche. Handheld development has traditionally been lower-budget, courtesy of greatly reduced specs, which has allowed developers to try more creative, higher-risk ideas because they don't stand to lose as much. The DS was a prime example of this. By making a handheld with console-grade specs, though, Sony eliminated that advantage. When developers had a choice between developing for a system with an install base of 2 million or spending the same budget developing for the 80 million PS3 owners (to say nothing of how readily they could port that game to the 360 and PC to tap even more of the market), it's not surprising it got ignored.

as much as I loved the psp, they just need to quit. when will people learn that thanks to shit like pokemon no one will ever beat nintendo in handhelds. wait until the love for that series finally dies off and then they might have a chance. I mean every handheld that goes head to head with nintendo is generally superior on what its capable of doing, but they always fail
