*before or after

I always just tipped based on the grand total. (or what it would've been without discounts/ordering tiny amounts) I've seen a couple places recently print suggested amounts on the receipt, and those seem to be based on the amount before tax is applied. Thoughts?

yeah, it's supposed to be before tax is applied. that said, the difference should be small, as 15-20% of 10% is only 1.5-2% of the original total..

I thought that was for doing the suggestions based on the whole table, when splitting the bill.

I've only ever done pre-tax, but since I round up I figure the addition of tax barely factors.

I've always done after tax because that's easier for me to calculate quickly but i also tend to do just under 20% so it all balances out

it's definitely supposed to be before tax, but they make it difficult to see sometimes

my personal method is to usually do 20% of the after tax amount, and then nudge the number down a little bit

i think it usually ends up being between 17 and 21 percent of the pre-tax number, and that's not anything to complain about

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Also they raised our tax to over 10% so this question crossed a make believe threshold of relevance.

I do it based on the suggestions without really checking if they're pre or post, and if no suggestions are provided I try to go with pre-tax.

If you do 18% of post-tax then that's ~20% of pre-tax with a 10% tax

I just double the whatever the amount taxed is, maybe a little over, and that usually gets you to 15% one way or the other.

Here's another question. If you buy a commemorative glass or join a service of theirs and it goes in the bill do you tip for that cost?
