I have heard people say "Tom Cruise is a great actor, but too bad he is a Scientologist". Yet if an actor says something about Christianity everyone is cool with it. They are both whack and have tons of crazy shit in their religions, yet people just kind of forget about how nutty Christianity is. Have we just become so desensitized to all the crazy shit in the bible? Will we be desensitized to Scientology in a few decades too?

in scientology you have to pay money to "progress" in the faith. Christianity is free.

in scientology, the entire thing is created by one author. Christianity was a collaborative effort of countless people to build the religion. Basically Scientology is artificial. Christianity is naturally grown

I think Scientology in itself is trying to separate itself form Christianity for its supernatural nature of deities and mythical basis and yet Scientology has its own crazy supernatural nature of deities and mythical basis of characters of over 20 million years old to which they know by first names.

The Christian faith isn't entirely free of fucked up shit happening. But to my knowledge, a Christian has never been pulled out of what basically amounts to a shitty isolated prison complex called The Hole hours before a television appearance, been coached to tell lies about being detained and abused, then taken straight back to that prison to be detained and abused some more.

To be fair, the guy who made that list is on the left (as am I, slightly), but rightfully calls out the regressive portion of the left which use said tactics.

that's one church of bad people. and the religion as a whole doesnt' require it. I grew up in catholicism and they passed out the pots too, but nobody was shamed for not putting money in. and thats not just one church cause my dad was in the army and we moved around. I've been to many churches in my growing up. and they were all like that. Scientology requires you to pay money to be upgraded in the religion. they tell you secrets and enhance your rank in the church, the more money you pay. and I'm not talking like a few bucks either like the christian donations on sunday. I mean like millions of dollars. that's why most scientologists are rich celebrities. only they can afford it

Actually. While Christianity doesn't require you give money to the church. It is encouraged and talked about in the bible. One of the main principles in the bible is that you only take what is needed to survive. Anything extra should be given away to either church or used to help people in need.

So it's not really fair to say that the religion doesn't require people to pay.

Many cults obsess over a living person/guide, such as L. Ron Hubbard. His science fiction writings pretty much became religious texts.

Cults often require you to give large sums of money to "know more", like Scientology. Scientology also keeps records of things you have said and threatens to expose you if you leave or badmouth the church. It attempts to isolate you from "repressive people" who criticize the church and actively tries to brainwash you. It's also a fairly recent belief system with a low number of adherents.

All religions start out as a cult, Christianity included. It's only after a significant amount of people believe in it and it becomes decentralized, giving way to numerous ambiguous interpretations that it becomes a religion. It also helps when it's really old and you can't ascertain certain facts. With cults, the "leader" is more likely to be alive or recently dead, and everyone and their mother can figure out that he doesn't have magic powers or isn't whatever he's claiming to be. After a couple thousand years, though, people aren't as critical because they can't ascertain it. It's harder for cults now because we have better technology and record-keeping so even people in the future (if we don't fuck it up) will know that cults like Scientology are a hoax.

Though Cult vs. Religion is a very controversial debate in academia. This is just my interpretation of it. There's no clear cut answer.
