Like I said.

They did it with ZERO promotion. Just cryptic messages from unreliable sources on Reddit. And then when they "released" it, they did it via a special Vinyl pre-order that they said would ship in October.

The first 500 pre-orders got packages marked 1/500 that were an un-marked CD with only one 61 minute track on it that was the album.

And then they finally released the actual album for digital download and purchase.

And they hit number one doing that.

ONLY Brand New. ONLY Jesse Lacey.

We are literally psychos. Here's what has happened.

Brand New: "This is our last album."

The lyrics to the album itself: "This is our last album."

Brand New's fanbase: "But what if this isn't even the real last album? So mysterious...."

It's very good, possibly my favorite album from them surpassing Devil and God.

Don't think it's gonna be my album of the year but I enjoyed it.

1. Deja Entendu

2. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
3. Science Fiction.

4. Daisy
5. Your Favorite Weapon

is basically my ranking. The extra space is how much better certain ones are.

YFW over SciFi that is the first person I've seen with that take.

I love YFW btw I just realize it has some limitations.

When the first chord of Seventy Times Seven came on in Buffalo though, that was the most insane the crowd went the entire show, which featured Deja from Start to Finish.

I just love that simple pop punk style, the songs are so catchy and fun to sing along to. And yet, you can still see traces of their future in there.

I still have so much to say about this album and I don't know where to start. It's been making me rethink a lot of things in my life lately and in every moment of silence I find myself combing through it's lyrics in my head.

Adding on to all the emotions I'm already working through because of the album, the husband of one of my girlfriends best friends went into cardiac arrest on Thursday night and they're currently seeing very little brain activity... I can't say I was ever close to him, and I've spent much more time with the wife (I met him for the first time at their wedding) but I mean she's only 27 and I think he's just in his early 30s. Never really had to think about death in any real capacity, I think I'm still in that young and invincible phase.. but when I heard the news I was already so numb and emotionally wrecked from this album it almost "made sense" that something this terrible was happening. I realize how narcissistic this may come off, but with how I've been thinking so much about what's really important in life over this past week, it just stood as a really stark reminder that depression, suffering, death, they're all omnipresent and that I need to stop bullshitting and complaining about anything that's not perfect in my own life.

Everyone has a favourite Brand New album, and I don't think there is any shred of objectivity when it comes to picking your favourite. I think they all just happen to come out at a time in your life when you're going through different shit and because of that they're all going to resonate differently. I don't think Science Fiction could have come out at a better time for me, and as much as I love TDAG (I'm listening to it right now) the themes of Science Fiction just seem too relevant to my life right now. I've never done an all-time favourite album ranking, but I know for a fact that this album has turned Brand New into my all-time favourite band and number 2 doesn't seem particularly close right now.

jesus

I'm so sorry.

this is... I mean there's no other way to quantify how awful this is to happen to someone, anyone but

let's all go play nagasaki.
we can all get vaporized

is a perfect representation of how we all wish death would be. Sudden. Accurate. All at once. Without remorse. Coming for us all.

And it does.

I don't want to dwell on this (this topic should be a celebration) but just an update. Me and my girlfriend went to the hospital last night and we had a pretty good visit (at least as good as could be under the circumstances) his vitals were all looking positive although he still hadn't woken up yet. We were able to even joke and share a few laughs... but that's where the positivity ends. Doctors said that if there isn't any brain activity after the 72 hour mark there is really no chance of him making a recovery, and we passed that point this morning. It's pretty fucking brutal since our friend (his wife) is considered his next of kin and has the responsibility of deciding when to pull the plug. I think they're going to wait a couple of days but yeah... this is it.

I've been having a hard time trying to explain to my girlfriend how I can see this album as being optimistic or uplifting when everything about it seems so dark and sad on the surface, but somehow it just is. I really wish it didn't take me this long to truly "get" Brand New. I always just thought it was good music, but it never transcended music as this album seems to have for me. I mean I missed their last tour because I had fucking work. At this point I wouldn't even care if I wasn't able to get the days off, I'd just blow the shift. This time around I'm strongly considering going to multiple shows, hopefully one is announced for Vancouver, and then if finances line up I'd really like to take a trip to New York, assuming they'll play some of their last ever shows there.
