Kaepernick's biggest problem is that zone read offenses aren't as effective in the NFL any more. QBs like him and Tebow shined while NFL defenses were still trying to figure out how to best defend against it. Now, though, an offense based on zone read just won't work very well at all.

Correct. He's not garbage like some people pretend he is to justify hate. But he's an average QB. He has a big media circus behind him tho which may scare some people

I don't have any strong opinions on this issue, but I love how the article completely overlooked any nuance in McCoy's statement despite the fact that they quoted him.

He already admitted that Kaep's protests might have something to do with it. He didn't attribute it to any one factor, stating that if Kaep were a better player then teams might ignore the controversy he brings.

"It’s a lot more than just he’s not on the team because he doesn’t want to stand for the national anthem," McCoy said, via Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. "That may have something to do with it, but I think also it has a lot to do with his play. I’m sure a lot of teams wouldn’t want him as their starting quarterback. That chaos that comes along with it, it’s a lot.

There’s certain players that could be on the team with big distractions, and there’s other players that it’s not good enough or not worth it. I think his situation is not good enough to have him on the team with all the attention that comes along with it."

I don't know much about football either, but yeah, he's an average player in a mix with the best in the world. That's what I understand. Does his protest have something to do with some of the teams not offering him a contract? Yeah, I'm sure there are, but it's not all of them.

What it comes down to is his talent doesn't out weight the negative press that surrounds him. Whether you agree or disagree with the guy, you can admit his opinions can be pretty divisive and that's never good for a professional sports team. However, there have been players that have done way more or way worse things and they have been kept on a team. So what it comes down to is yes he may be good enough to be a backup or maybe a low tier starter in the NFL, but in the minds of owners and coaches that isn't enough to overcome the negative attention the team that signs him may or may not get

Kaepernick is a below-average player at the QB position even in schemes designed to take advantage of him. He had a great rookie season, and has been shit since.

He cannot play QB in regular offensive schemes.

Sad to say, he's right.

if he was a great player, Teams would
go for him despite his protest.

But he's an average player, so they decide
he's not worth the trouble.

What team would he be an improvement for?

The only teams that run a scheme he's potentially compatible with are Carolina and Seattle. Do you think he would make those teams better? As a backup?

He is and has been more than a zone read QB though.

Also no one really ran the zone read professionally. Chip Kelly chickened out and was running predetermined plays that operated out of the zone read motions but never had the QB make a read let alone run it with a QB that had any athleticism.

And what makes zone read effective in the first place is that you cannot defend it unless the defender you decide to let free can be in two places st once

different systems have difference lee-way for QBs to make changes at the line of scrimmage

they were backed up to the end zone and taking a sack there is a safety

running was the safer option

Did you guys even read what he said?

He's objectively right.

“There’s certain players that could be on the team with big distractions, and there’s other players that it’s not good enough or not worth it. I think his situation is not good enough to have him on the team with all the attention that comes along with it."

McCoy said that for an elite player, like Tom Brady, teams would be willing to look past it. But not for Kaepernick.

"A guy who wants to protest police brutality and racism in the United States is too much distraction for the NFL"

at this point, the NFL and its viewers that enable this kind of thing are the ones with a problem

btw if YOU actually read the article you'd see that Colin Kaepernick is not actually that bad, and compared to some QBs who DO have a team, he's much better.
There's literally zero reason he's still unsigned. Other than being blackballed, probably.

Anyone who talks about his performance drop-off, it correlates with the departure of the only coach who actually wanted Kaepernick on the team I guess, Jim Harbaugh
