The teacher defended her actions to read two children's books about transgenderism including one titled "I am Jazz." She says the books were given to her by a transgender child going through a transition.

"The kindergartners came home very confused, about whether or not you can pick your gender, whether or not they really were a boy or a girl," said England.

Parents say besides the books, the transgender student at some point during class also changed clothes and was revealed as her true gender.

The district says the books were age-appropriate and fell within their literature selection policy. Unlike sex education, the topics of gender identity don't require prior parental notice.

I am at ends on this one.

On the one hand, her reasoning behind such a thing was good.

On the other hand, those kids were WAY to young and impressionable to understand something as complicated as gender identity.

In the end, I think the teacher was in the wrong to do so and a topic like transgenderism shouldn't be covered till children are more able to understand what they are being told.

Actually no, 5 year old's don't generally understand gender at all and have only the slightest idea of possible differences between them.

But judging by your response you are probably as bad as gunplagirl which means arguing with you is likely pointless.

She really did have good intentions and I don't believe she should be fired. But, forcing your good intentions on children in this manner is wrong.

I could understand middle School, or even 3rd-4th grade, but these kids are still getting their ABC's down, worrying about cooties.

At least it seemed to reaffirm the other children's idea of their own gender I guess​.

Seems like the main reason they addressed it at all was because it was relevant to something that was happening in their classroom. Some of them got it, some of them didn't. I personally don't see much of an issue, and I wouldn't have a problem with them broaching this subject in my son's class

I was thinking more the issue of keeping it out of the agenda so parents didn't know it was going to be taught. Also teaching any form of sex ed to a kindergartener. Also whether a kindergartener is old enough to go through any form of transition. I'm not debating that GD exists, but there's a LOT about this story that's really questionable.

they probably should have waited till the kids were older, but I think the teacher was coming at it from a good place. She wasn't trying to brainwash the kids, she was trying to explain stuff on the behalf of another student.

I mean, you can't expect a trans child to be able to explain their situation on their own to other kids, do you?

The question of whether kids should be transitioning to begin with is a whole other issue, but in this case, the teacher and the students were forced to address the concept of transgenderism because it was right in front of them.
