I could even just set it to video mode then point my phone at the sky.

Then see if I got a video of it.

Partial solar eclipse photography

Tip No. 1: Use a filter to protect your screen. It is possible to damage your cellphone or tablet while photographing the sun, according to Angela Speck, co-chair of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force and director of astronomy at the University of Missouri.

first off
she is not an engineer or optics expert
RED FLAG

Speck told Space.com that the extremely bright, glowing ball could burn the pixels in the screen of a cellphone or tablet.

second
she seems to think the lens captures the actual sunlight such that it will blow out pixels
RED FLAG

oh but totally like climate change denier eh?

Like, how will it break the pixels? The lens captures the light like a camera and the phone tranforms that into digital data.
This data is then translated onto the screen.
It would make sense that the camera or the lens get messed up, but the screen?

How does she think this could ever happen?
Explain @I_Like_Toast since you seem to have bought into it

But feel free to ignore nasa like a climate denier.

@I_Like_Toast

http://www.businessinsider.com/can-you-watch-the-solar-eclipse-with-your-iphone-camera-2017-8

so basically the lady is full of bs

also it looks like you didn't even read the link

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/Photographing%20the%20Eclipse%20with%20your%20Smartphone.pdf

The basic argument in favor of it being safe for the camera is
that the lenses are generally very small (2 millimeters or so) and do not admit enough light. Also, cameras come equipped with UV filters that cut down on some of the visible light landing on the sensor chip. Finally, they automatically set their exposures for very short
times.

Nearly every photographer that comments on this issue says it is OK if you do it very briefly such
as when you are taking a scenery photo and the sun is in the picture.
The argument for it not being safe
is that some of the more recent smartphones use larger and faster lenses (f/1.7 to f/2.0) to get better resolution, and that can be a problem.

Most digital cameras have an Auto mode in which they will automatically reduce the exposure
speed and increase the f/stop to take the photo, and this will not harm the camera. However, you will need to point the camera at the sun, and you will no doubt accidently glimpse the full-on solar disk and THAT could damage your eyes if you prolong it.

more worried about YOUR eyes

and guess what, they say there is potential to damage the camera which is of course expected

but that is not what the lady said, she said the display

BI also says don't try to use the selfie mode as your will reflect UV light from the screen at YOUR eyes

can be a problem, if not for:

Like I said, you didn't even attempt to read it, it seems. They literally go, "this could have issues, well except that the phone is built to prevent that from being an issue"

toast's conclusion? "it will break your phone! believe that or you are denying science!!"
