They were complaining how it was too expensive for such a crappy game, and that it was the worst Mario RPG.

Part of me wanted to rage on those "darn young'ns" because I loved it so much (it was my first turn-based RPG), but another part of me recognise thay compared to things like Superstar Saga and Thousand Year Door, it's a little bland, and probably is the weakest one. It's not really aged well at all.

This is what we've been teaching the younger generations. That is "Ok" to hate on Mario RPG. I see so many people saying it's not that good, too easy, baby's first RPG etc

If this is the example we set for them, then future generations are doomed to repeat it.

I played SMRPG after playing Superstar Saga and it was way better. Superstar Saga sucked. All those Mario and Luigi games sucked tbh

It's hyped up to much.

I never got to play it until the virtual console version, and it is not as good as people make it out to be. It's a perfectly serviceable RPG and it meets the standards of the era. But it is NOT as good as people say it is.

I disliked Superstar Saga because it treated Bowser like a Looney Tunes antagonist. He gets gets stuck in a canon, then suffers amnesia, then has his sex swapped, then finally gets gift wrapped. I understand that he's a brute and a buffoon, but Bowser should always bear with him a general sense of menace. Use Wario if you need someone to play the part of a Yosemite Sam or Elmer Fudd.

Even if they hadn't maligned Bowser, games like Paper Mario and Superstar Saga simply felt smaller by comparison. Smithy was such a powerful force that it took the combined efforts of Mario and Bowser to bring him down. Having Mario and Goombario team up against Bowser or Mario and Luigi take on Cackletta just isn't the same. And presentation is everything in RPGs.

SMRPG is a really phenomenal game but I always think of Paper Mario as the true representation of the Mario universe as a whole. A lot of the characters and enemies in SMRPG don't really feel like they fit in the Mario universe. And that's obviously because it's a Square game and they never made another Mario game after that.

Its a great game, but holy shit is it overrated.

OG Paper Mario, Thousand Year Door, Superstar Saga, and Bowser's Inside Story are all way better.

It's an amazingly fun game, though. People should learn to appreciate games that were released in the context of the era they were released in.

Bowser is still comic relief in Bowser's Inside Story but it gives him many moments of awesome making him a cool character despite it. Anyways all characters are comic relief in the Mario & Luigi games.

I bought it on release day when I was a kid. It wasnt that great for it's time either. It was overshadowed by games like FF6 and CT.

I haven't replayed it since then either come to think of it. I wonder if I'd like it more since a decent turn based rpg is hard to find now.

ttyd has a lot of flaws

-there's recolors everywhere, a big problem in a game based on learning the patterns of new enemies
-there's a lot of backtracking, probably even worse than the flower seed quest
-the glitz pit chapter has an interesting gimmick for the story but gameplay-wise it's garbage; same with the spooky town chapter
-it's really easy and there's so much stuff that the devs didn't even bother to balance
-there's not really a reason not to just spam power bounce like in the last game
-the game overall is way too similar to the first game in terms of structure, playable characters, enemy designs, and even the design of certain chapters

idk how any can say it ages horribly >_> The only thing that looks bad is probably the artstyle on a HDTV, but all SNES games look bad in HD. The controls are fine and the battle system is super smooth.

In terms of the tone, I feel like Super Mario RPG is Mario as Mario should be. But then you look at a lot of the enemies, especially later in the game, and they don't really feel like Mario adversaries.

You disagree? I got an N64 when it came out. Played the shit out of Goldeneye. But I honestly can't go back to it these days because of the awful frame rate and controls.

I might just have those googles on. But I still love it. Note I have not played all of the other ones. However I am big fan of Bowser, and getting to play as him. Damn that was the best. Note and like someone else said he wasn't still Bowser someone you didn't want to mess with. And that is after having his castle stolen. lol He was still the man.

Yoko Shimomura did the music for Mario RPG, which is why it's so good. The normal battle music is so goddamn catchy and that forest maze theme is fucking classic.

Mario RPG felt nothing like a Mario game and half the characters didn't belong in the Mushroom Kingdom. It wasn't a great RPG either, I played it in the N64/PS1 days cause everyone said it was "one of the best!"
Maybe it was unfair to compare it to PS1 RPGs but... Breath of Fire 3 is way better, and it has problems too.

I did enjoy Paper Mario 64 and Partners in Time, but I can't get into Superstar Saga.

I did enjoy BiS, but it's probably not even the second best game in the series. And none of the Mario and Luigi games are even close to being as good as SMRPG and the Paper Marios in my opinion.
