You only damage your eyes if you look at the non-total eclipse, right? Why do people look at a fucking giant bright light in the sky? It doesn't look any different to the naked eye unless it's in totality

The gist is that if you're looking at it when the sun breaks away from the moon, the sharp increase in light will damage your eyes. If you glance quickly you're probably fine, I guess but the big thing is not getting caught looking as it moves.

It's like a quick reaction video game!

During the couple minutes of totality? Sure.

During any part of the partial eclipse? Not so much. You can still do considerable damage to your eyes by looking at the sun during a partial eclipse. Given the circumstances and the hype behind this eclipse, the warnings are quite well placed.

Yeah I don't get why people make such a huge deal out of it during the eclipse. I'm sure everyone's glanced at the sun now and then in their life at other times.

Definitely true, you shouldn't stare at it directly without a filter. There is some urban legend that looking at the sun during an eclipse is actually more damaging, which I've never really understood.

It probably has more to do with the fact that a lot more people are inclined to look at the sun during an eclipse, because you know, eclipse. Common sense tends to go out the window when it comes to rare events like that.

Then again, if common sense were a thing, people would not need to be reminded not to drive while wearing eclipse glasses. One would thing the whole not being able to see a damn thing would be enough of a hint to not operate heavy machinery while wearing them.

It's because it causes no pain, so you can easily stare at it for a solid few minutes, which would definitely cause some substantial damage.

The shadows from the moon blocking part of the sun makes your pupils larger, so your eyes are more exposed.

It's not the brightness of the visible light that damages your eyes, it's the UV that you can't see. That's why regular sunglasses won't work and you need something specifically designed to block the maximum amount of UVA/B/C possible. You absolutely will damage your eyes if you try to view it without the right protection, it's not scaremongering in any way.
