He wasn't originally. The character was acquired when DC bought out one of their competitors.

Somewhere in the legal clusterfuck, DC lost the rights to the name to Marvel comics.

Fun fact : The best selling comic book of all time is a Captain Marvel comic.

Also Captain Marvel was the most popular comic book character for a while, even surpassing Superman.

Goober (from Andy Griffith) is known for saying "Shazam" a lot, but this is actually a reference to Captain Marvel, who yells "SHAZAM" to summon magic lightning that transforms him to/from Captain Marvel, heals him, or does a variety of other things. It sounds like a coincidence, but Goober actually does mention Captain Marvel by name in one episode.

It was actually because he was so popular that lawsuits and stuff happened over his similarity to Superman. I guess it's fortunate Green Arrow never got more popular than Batman.

Captain Marvel did not have the same comic book publisher as Superman so that's why there was a lawsuit.
Batman & GA have always been DC so no lawsuit.

Yeah, it is one of those wtf stories.
Fawcett was a comic publisher that created Captain Marvel 1940, which was a popular character. It even outsold the Superman comic.
DC didnt like that, so they sued Fawcett for breach of copyright, saying that it was a copy of Superman.
I think Fawcett won by a mistake by DC or something.
Anyway, Fawcett stopped publishing comics in 1953 because people bought less comics.
In 1972 DC licensed the rights to the Captain Marvel comics and they bought the full rights in 1994.
But... Marvel, you know that other big comic publishers, published a comic named Captain Marvel in the late 60s and trademarked it, so DC had to call their Captain Marvel for Shazam!, and Marvel kept releasing new Captain Marvels from time to time just to keep their trademark and giving DC the finger.

Now in 1996 we had a DC VS Marvel crossover which resulted in the Amalgam Universe, which basically merged one character from each universe into a new character. Like Dark Claw which merged Wolverine with Batman.
The Marvel Captain Marvel was merged with the DC Captain Marvel and created... Captain Marvel!
