Subscription based service. Let's you see one movie a day at participating venues, including AMC so now they're trying to figure how to back out of the deal.

If it really is "unsustainable", then AMC (who is getting paid full price anyway) should actively encourage it's use, and bankrupt Moviepass as soon as possible.

No, the real fear is that Moviepass will eventually mandate movie ticket pricing, either by setting a fixed "reimbursement rate", or by creating an expectation of paying "32 cents" to see a movie.

Nah, they'll just build a huge userbase, which means more venture capitalist funding.

Why does AMC even care? It is not as if Movie Theaters make much money off the ticket sales, they make their money from their vastly overpriced food and drinks.

going the gym membership route is really ingenious.

you'll have so many people paying their monthly movie sub and not going or going sparsely.

the fact that people don't have to pay for a ticket when they see the movie means they will more likely spend on concessions which is the bulk of their profits anyway.

it's a steady flow of revenue.

There theaters are nice at least.

Big soft reclining seats with tons of leg room and a leg rest.

Owning the DVD of the movie costs less than seeing it in the theaters. There's no excuse for that

They don't but they still pay for the rights to show the movie. If the tickets are cheaper you'll need more attendance to meet your goal.

But as already stated, moviepass pays AMC the full ticket price, even though tickets don't make the theater much money.

Why the fuck can't I pay $20 a month to order two seats together

Having two separate $10 subscriptions and having my wife order at the same time as me still puts us at risk of not scoring seats together.

Most AMCs are reserved seating and they can ring up the tickets at the same time to guarantee you 2 seats together assuming the show isn't selling out.

Movie theaters barely make profit selling tickets, they make most of their revenue selling their over priced concessions. The only one here actually losing is probably Moviepass themselves because something like this doesn't seem very smart. They really need to have a huge userbase for something like this to be sustainable.

I think the idea is take losses now to build up a huge subscriber base and eventually develop a monopoly to then force theater chains to accept less from MP. Either just a flat fee to the theater chains to have access to MP or get a fraction of the current cost per ticket. It's why AMC is opting out, they don't want Moviepass to ever grow to the point where they can force theater chains to capitulate.

The one I got to is at the top of a 3 level real life SoDoSoPa district. It's so nice and many things to do before going to see a movie in IMAX.

I will say the newer AMC are nice. I do appreciate the big comfy reclining seats and all that. I really hope MP takes off, but as it stands AMC is just as expensive as all the theaters around (over 15 bucks for a regular ticket), so I don't really criticize AMC for that.

My one gripe is they show SO many more trailers than other theaters, and they do that stupid AMC tag at the end of each of them that shows the release date for the movie. All that does is drag out the trailers even more. One time I kept time on my watch it took over 25 mins for the movie start. Absurd.

I signed up on Tuesday when they announced it, I'll be using it a lot. AMC is worried it'll force a paradigm shift among moviegoers so that they won't be willing to pay $14+ a ticket in the future. Because after paying $10 a month for all the movies you could want, nobody would want to ever go back to paying that much per ticket.

Also I think AMC was planning on setting up a similar service for their cinemas, and MoviePass just undercut them.
