Looks like the Steam port/version of Sega CD had some of the same people behind it (correct me if I'm wrong). I've been playing some Sonic Advance as well. I think 2D Sonic is a simple formula that they could make every 2-4 years

What do you think?

Nah. Sega will somehow find some way to fuck it all up again.

Personally, I don't see why not. Sega didn't develop this game - they had the studio which did their phone ports (and some fan games) do it and they published it.

Why not use a very successful formula when they themselves don't even have to develop it?

And the separate 2D and 3D series games has worked out great for Mario, and I think it can really work for Sonic. As odd as it is, 3D Sonic does have a consistent fanbase. Simply doing both at once, as they are now with Sonic Edge and Mania, is a great way to appeal to and profit from both fanbases.

I think 2D Sonic should definitely be more of a regular thing, and keep it separate from the 3D games. Also all the people behind Mania should be making them, because Sonic Team themselves don't really know how to make good Sonic games consistently anymore.

I'm not sure why they intentionally gave Mania shit graphics, though. Could've had the same gameplay without going "muh nostalgia" with dated looks, no?

Graphics aren't everything but there's no real reason to intentionally make it look as ugly as possible.

Do you have a source on this? I know they've made quotes speaking on how Mania will determine 2D Sonic's future, but I don't recall any direct comparisons to Forces like that. And like Darmik said, Forces isn't even out yet.

Plus, let's be honest, even if Mania does better, 3D Sonic isn't going anywhere.

I don't have any faith in Sega, tbh. But I suspect that Sonic Mania is going to sell very well, and I fully trust this dev team to deliver more top-tier 2D Sonic games... if Sega lets them.

Mania gets pushed by a very loud vocal minority. The sales wont reflect the hype.

The gaming populous at large isn't interested in half baked remixes of old 16 bit games. You can pull off some 2D appeal if you make it actual HD but the crowd of fanatics specifically looking for twenty five year old pixelation isn't big enough to support an ongoing franchise.

Unless they release Sonic Mania physically I'm sure Forces will still outsell Mania.

Which I'm sure Sega knows anyway. But I bet Mania will still beat their overall expectations and the critical reception has certainly caught their attention.

Mania/Genesis style games will replace the portable/arcade games presumably. Not sure what that means for Dimps. Sonic Team will continue making bigger budget sonic style games. Hopefully they'll take some influence from Mania.

Mania has a very small dev team. The sales numbers don't have to be huge in order to justify the budget.

And there have been some notable success stories lately, with retro revivals.

You're likely very wrong in that assumption. Mania is already at the top of the Switch's sales charts and I suspect it'll be pretty high on other charts as well. Its collectors edition was $50 and it sold out completely.

The game is only $20, so it wouldn't be unrealistic to say that the "hype" is probably real. There have been hundreds on forums and social media who haven't even remote interest in the series speaking to how good the game is (definitely a lot more than that in reality) and it has received amazing reviews all around. I see Mania selling close to 1 million rather easily.

That being said, Forces will definitely sell even more than that.

I'm also on android, though I got it from (can't say the method 'cause ToU), and I don't think it's from the guys that made the 1/2/CD ports, it has many slowdowns, and I think it's just emmodded, though I didn't download any genesis/mega drive you-know-what

I wonder if they'll look into doing some other remixes for their older titles like Streets of Rage and Shinobi. Streets of Rage Mania would be great.

It's a lot better than their weird ass attempt to make a AAA Golden Axe game last gen, Digital only releases opens the door for games like that.

I guess they never really stopped. They always tried. 1-3, CD, some Game Gear ones, Game Boy Advance 1-3, 4 part 1 and 2, now they tried this. I think the only problem was that 4 was bad
