Theoretically I'm actually on board with ABP's idea.

It's meant to curb invasive, user-experience hostile ads and replace them with ads that are tolerable or ignorable if you have no desire to look at them.

Shit like full-screen, video ads that cover what you're trying to look at are unacceptable but if the industry could just go back to unobstructive, well-placed ads that aren't distracting, that's fine.

Cat & mouse game between advertisers and adblockers. uBlock with multi-purpose fanboy+easylist seems to be best at keeping up.

you can also go into your modem and change your DNS to

176.103.130.130

176.103.130.131

to block ads on every fucking thing on your network

DNS servers won't do that. All they are, essentially, is a phonebook for the internet.

I know what you mean, but websites (netflix) can make decisions based on where a DNS request originates. a proxy DNS is how you 'trick' netflix into thinking you're in a different region.

But the ones they aren't blocking are both highly disruptive and unskippable.

Netflix has no idea how you figured out its IP is 54.194.149.231. All it knows is your IP address, that you've gotten from your ISP, and that's how it decides you're being naughty.

k, you're right I'm wrong, which is good because I didn't like that that conflicted with my understanding.

what unblock-us does is use their own DNS servers, which made me wonder how that could affect anything, but apparently it's by changing the address entries for specific sites to use their proxy web servers, so you get a proxied connection for those specific sites, and a regular connection for everything else.

I just use NoScript, and enable the main site and any cdns or other secondary domains that are the minimum requirement for the site to function properly.

Any ad that still shows up after doing that is not going to be bothersome. Mostly because any ad that still shows up likely is made of javascript from some weird site from who knows where.

uBlock Origin is better in every way. It blocks malicious pop-ups and redirects. And if you're like me, you want that extra protection that NoScript can give.

This. Allowing youtube and googlevideo is all that's needed to view videos.

Surprised folk are STILL using adblock. I mean it crapped out a long time ago for me and thanks to Helly and his recommendation I switched to uBlock. I haven't looked back.

I had uBlock on one of my browsers but I fucked all the settings and started blocking things that I didn't mean to.

I probably should have cut over to AdBlock Edge and started fresh but instead I just went back to AdBlock Plus.

Have you updated your easylist? I do not get any ads with ABP. When I do, I just update my easylist and they go away.
