I consider it an inefficiency of the capitalist system that people can get filthy rich without actually benefiting society. A pro-athlete or a youtuber should not be making 50x more than a heart surgeon.

EDIT: Look people, I understand the economics behind why they make the money they do, but it is flawed from a utilitarian perspective. The topic is about a philosophical gripe I have with capitalism. People should be paid according to the direct and tangible benefit they provide to society. Saving lives deserves a greater reward than hitting a baseball.

The demand for the product of pro sports is what makes them money. If the people didn't want it then they wouldn't get paid. Turns out there's a huge market for sports and thus athletes get paid.

Also, can a typical heart surgeon make it in the NFL athletically? Sure your average pro athlete might not be good at math but you make it seem like just because they're "idiots" that they didn't work hard to hone their bodies and be good at their craft and that it was just something given to them

Oh, I understand it. I just think it is flawed from a utilitarian and ethical perspective. I am not proposing any sort of solution, I am just bitching about it. The life of a surgeon is worth more than the life of a basketball player, and their place in society should reflect that.

Look at it this way. Every profession has clients. A heart surgeon takes on one client at a time for high pay, multiple times a day.

A football team has millions of clients(fans) paying far less per client and far less often however due to their ability to take on so many clients at once, they make more money.

If a heart surgamm had a way to serve even a quarter of the number of clients the play has in a month, they'd make far more than the football player.

Pro athletes who aren't total douchebags give underprivileged youth who lack gifted intelligence hope that they could still reach success someway.

Even if the kids never actually become athletes themselves, it can help knowing that someone else in the world with mere basic intelligence can still make it big. It can open their views to similar opportunities that are closer to home and practical.

And frankly, speaking from experience working in medical fields, quite a few doctors who prevent fatalities are still douchebags. Being a doctor is not a badge of honor in itself. Being an dependable and ethical doctor who displays at least bare minimum compassion towards patients even after years of practicing is what honorable medicine is. Not just some certifications stuck on a wall...

I literally just said I understand and dont care about the economics of it. In a perfect society, people are rewarded to the tangible benefits the provide to society, not the amount of revenue they generate.

This is such a bullshit excuse. Anything could do that. On the off chance that some guy farting loudly into a megaphone uplifts "someone's spirit, giving them drive to live another day" should he also be awarded millions of dollars?

Ultimately people are saying "they have justly earned that money because they have earned a lot of money". This is what happens when money is your god. Well, I guess I can look forward to such insightful responses as:

"ur peanut bitter and jelly"

and

"they make moar money than u so ur rong"

Ironically a heart surgeon would be making even less if health care and access to it wasn't so fucked and expensive.

An ethical doctor would focus on underprivileged patients.

Did you actually even read what I said?

If you consider the money they get per single fan they are rewarded significantly less than the doctor.

If a doctor helped that many people during the same time span, he'd make way more than the guy playing football.

Lmao the reason athletes get paid a bunch is because people are mornic enough to spend a shit ton of money on the sports industry, ergo they are highly valued in the market. No theft involved, theyre just reaping the benefits of the millions and millions of sports jocks out there spending all that money on a literal game. So either blame the system or blame the idiots who actually help fund hundreds of millions of dollars for a damn game. What you expect these athletes to do, not take the money? Please. Furtheremore it's well documented athletes donates a higher percentage of their income to charities than pretty much any other profession. But hey, we know you're here to troll so I'll leave you to it
