Two babysitters from Massachusetts have been arrested for putting a baby into a refrigerator. The two teenage girls were charged on Aug. 8 with child endangerment and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon after posting a Snapchat video of themselves refrigerating the baby under their care

The video shows them laughing as they heard screaming from inside the closed refrigerator door. Moments later, they are seen opening the door and removing the infant, but it is unclear how long the victim was inside.

The next scene shows a person holding the baby in another room of the house. The incident reportedly occurred in Danvers, Massachusetts, on Aug. 7, according to NECN.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office said the two girls were arrested in Danvers on Aug.8.

"This past evening at approximately 9:30 p.m., Danvers officers were notified by Swampscott police about a potential situation," Danvers Police Chief Patrick Ambrose said regarding the arrest.

The names of the babysitters are not being released because they are juveniles. In an interview with NECN, the baby's mother, Bonnie Brogna, said she was away from the house for a little over half an hour when the Snapchat video was posted.

"I was horrified," she said. "I didn't expect that to happen. These teenagers, I don't believe they did it to harm my child. Teenagers are silly, stupid, foolish -- they do things like that -- and I've been a teenager before. It's pretty clear to see that they were joking and laughing."

Brogna said one of the babysitters was a family member, while the other was a family friend.

The Department of Children and Families said it is investigating in collaboration with law enforcement. The child is reportedly doing well and is at home with family. Since the passage of the Refrigerator Safety Act in 1956, all new refrigerators sold in the United States must be designed to be "easily openable from the inside,"

Scientific studies were devoted to the issue, including a 1958 article titled "Behavior of Young Children Under Conditions Simulating Entrapment in Refrigerators," which was published in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The legal mandate for safer refrigerators ultimately led to the familiar current design, in which a magnetic mechanism allows doors to stay closed but still easy to push open from the inside.

Interesting story, kids used to get trapped in fridges all the time back before that refrigerator safety act. In olden days kids would play at the junk yard (because they didn't have the internet or video games) and hide in fridges, but some of them had such heavy doors that the kids couldn't push them open from the inside.

You can probably imagine how that ended for the kid. :u What a nightmare.

Then you're fucking stupid.

Unless they're mentally challenged, they should at that age, have the capacity to realize that an action like that would do damage to a child.

If that was my child, they would be beaten pretty badly before taken into custody, don't given a shit who they are.

Well it wasn't necessarily that the doors were heavy. It was that Ice Boxes or old Refrigerators had snap locks on them where you had to lift the handle to open them. Once you were inside there was no way to lift the handle, so you were trapped.

Oh, that makes more sense.

But can you imagine how horrific dying like that would be? Makes me nervous just thinking about it.

See the issue is that a lot of teens would just roll their eyes at that. I mean, obviously we can see that the child is okay, which kind of proves their way of thinking.
That's the issue. As an adult our brains are more developed and we go "ok even if it's not likely to cause any damage, why risk it?" Teens don't have the luxury of a fully developed brain though

Also, we're removed from the situation. It's like when you're out with a group of friends and you all do something stupid that you wouldn't do normally. And not just as if you've been drinking, but being around other people and having a blast means you act a little differently, and not always in a good way

Yes you know the risks, but you also know it's unlikely to happen. Which it didn't. Which proves their point.
The baby is fine, there will be no long-term damage.
We don't do it because the potential risk is horrible no matter how low the chances are, but to them they just go "nothing bad will happen so it's ok" and they were right.

I get that she's only saying it's not a big deal because the perpetrators are a relative and a friend of the family, but don't try to justify this. If the babysitters were anyone not related / closely related, she'd be throwing a fit over this.

Most likely it was a random thought that they thought would be a cool video to upload to snapchat or youtube or whatever kids use these days, so they did it.
The baby was in just moments and wont get hurt by it. Im not saying that the kids did the right thing, just saying that taking it to court is overreacting.
...and Im pretty sure that Ive read that the mother took a shower when it happened weeks ago, or did it happen again?

A couple left their infant in the charge of a teenage, hippie-type girl while they went out on the town for the evening. When the mother phoned home a few hours later to check up on things, the babysitter informed her that everything was fine and that she had put the turkey in the oven. A few moments later the couple recalled that they left no turkey at home; they rushed home and found that the babysitter, high on LSD, had cooked their baby in the oven.

Since the passage of the Refrigerator Safety Act in 1956, all new refrigerators sold in the United States must be designed to be "easily openable from the inside,"

Which is great and has saved lots of lives but we're talking about an infant here.

I wonder if they've ever considered making a fridge with a microphone inside that will to auto-open if it detects loud sounds inside the fridge.

Could be annoying if bottles fall over or something though.
