The 1st game was so much fun! I would LOVE to see it done with today's graphics.

I'd prefer to see a really good Mercenaries 3, but I wouldn't be bothered by a remaster of the first one.

The Just Cause series sort of filled the void Mercenaries left, but it definitely pales in comparison to the first Mercenaries. Hell, it pales even to the second. I know Mercs 2 had its issues, but I still enjoyed that game quite a bit.

I bought the second one since I loved the first one, but never owned it. Imagine the disappointment I experienced.

It wasn't. The lack of the Deck of 52 concept was a really big loss. It gave the first game its identity in my opinion. And the setting, characters, and story were all better in the first game. The second one has some goofy, but fun vehicles and some more airstrike options. I never thought it was a bad game, just wasn't quite as good as the first.

I don't know how anyone can say the setting of dreary, drab, nothing but grey and brown North Korea was better than the vibrant colors of Venezuela.

The air vehicles improved the gameplay greatly as well.

Deck of 52 being gone was disappointing though, I'll give you that.

I meant more than just the visuals in regards to the setting. Yeah, Venezuela looked nicer. But everything going on around the game world just didn't feel as interesting. The first game is war-torn North Korea with a bunch of factions all with their own stake and you're called in as a one-man army. Felt more like a true mercenary to me. The stakes were higher perhaps. Don't know if I'm explaining myself well, but just the feel of the game was better.

Mercenaries 2 is still one of the biggest disappointments in my gaming career. I played it through once with each character, but damn, I didn't enjoy it near as much as the first. The first had a really good feel to it. It took itself seriously, though not too seriously. Mercs 2 was a clown show by comparison.

Oh, I took setting as just like literal location. My bad.

Eh, I still liked Mercenaries 2 a lot. But yeah, thinking back I guess overall the atmosphere in Mercs 1 was better.

That final mission was a lot better too.

Despite its bugs and jankyness Mercs 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. I captured every single target alive with all three characters. That last level was fucking insane. NO CHECKPOINTS. And you face down tanks, helicopters, snipers etc. But getting into a hostile area and calling in an evac successfully was such a fun feeling.

I only ever played the demo as a kid, really loved what the game did with the PS2. It was one of the first times I realised you could turn back without leaving the mission area of a game, and collect resources and bonuses before tackling the meat of the mission. The demo level had a big gate in it, and you could go into a nearby town, get an armoured truck and a couple of other mercs and bow the gate off its hinges. Good shit - I wish I had the full game back in the day.

There's an early episode of Demo Disk by Funhaus where one of them finds a copy of Mercenaries on PS2. They break each demo disk after playing it, and since they couldn't play Mercenaries on a PC, they just snapped it. I was pissed.

the hell is deck of 52

The war criminals you are hunting down are all assigned a card. The higher the card value the more valuable the target. After you capture or kill enough of the lower value targets you can go after the ace of the suite you are working on. If you capture your target instead of killing them you get double the reward.
