Did research and found out where a lot of Vietnamese people were moving into a certain region in LA. Scheduled for some interviews for a tax firms around the area and got called back from 3 of them. I basically picked the job that paid the highest and it also did help that I could speak Vietnamese rather fluently.

Knowing 2 languages puts you into a major advantage in getting jobs.

i ran into my friend at a train station and we started talking. i told him i was stressed out looking for a job (i had just been rejected after a 4 STAGE INTERVIEW PROCESS)

and he said that his job was looking for someone to teach computers. i applied and dropped his name and got an interview and they loved me. got hired.

then, the director of our program mysteriously quit and when some of the supervisors got suspended for asking too many questions, E V E R Y O N E quit. except me. cuz i need money. that left a lot of open positions and i got "promoted"

now im the program coordinator at a high school we partner with, because the old coord quit.

had an 8 hour long psychology test

WTF

Companies need to quit with this type of crap (unless that psych test is absolutely necessary due to the type of position or something)

I don't mind the psych test itself so much as how goddamn long it takes. 8 hours? And you aren't even guaranteed the job? WTF.

yea its dumb

all managers/executives and anyone who has manager-access to critical documents and systems (like i do as an internal auditor) has to take it

theres a 7~ hour written portion (math, literacy, honesty questions, etc)

and an hour long interview with the psychologist where he/she asks you random trivia, riddles, random shit to see how you react

and everything is timed to determined to see how you work under pressure i think

we never get to see our own results but i've seen others while going through people's personnel files

the company owners have been requiring this for 40~ years so w/e

Applied to a co-op job posting, got hired for the summer and then kept getting extended on contract until they hired me permanently. That part took 4 years unfortunately, lol.

I got my most recent promotion from acting in the position for most of the last 2 years and then my manager was finally able to offer the promotion officially.

I put my resume on craigslist and a job recruiter said the company wanted to interview me and start me as soon as possible. I had a job offer from a fortune 500 company in Nashville, TN that I was about to actually move for, but this other job was in Austin, TX and paid more. So I decided to stay in Austin.

i was a contracts intern for the DOD, applied to a procurement job for a large company that does lots of defense work on the defense side. Got the job after 3 years, got a promotion to manage engineers at ~25 with my BA in business administration, did that for a couple of years until the program was wrapping up and they realized I wasn't qualified for my position so they moved me to contracts, which I also wasn't technically qualified for since I don't have a law degree, did that for a few years, then moved to non-production commercial stuff as a manager over a procurement group, didn't like the command chain so did a lateral to another group I loved, did a great job, so they moved me to a job I didn't want/ask for with no direct reports.

So for the first time since I hired in in 2005 I am looking for another company to work for.

My best friend's dad heard I was looking for work around home to do while I went to community college so he called me and said I could start working for him the following week. Filled out little bits of paperwork but that's it. I've been here for over two years now.

He runs a cable contracting company and also owns a bunch of rental homes around Detroit so I work in Comcast buildings mostly but I've also been doing work on his houses. Painting and cleaning, mostly.

at least within the dept of defense and their associated contractors and consultants, internships are essentially programs to scout for new hires in advance

pretty much everyone who has ever interned at my employer was able to get a job here if they wanted to

is that any different than other fields? I'd assume that's how it always works but my actual experience is pretty narrow

it definitely isnt how political thinktanks work, a lot of my dc friends have done unpaid internships that never led to a job

my experience is narrow--university research, NASA, and DoD/contractor.

I applied. Didn't hear anything for a couple of months. Then got an email and had a phone call. Then interviewed on site for a half day. Got an offer.

I'm honestly surprised I got the job. It's a well known company with a crap ton of applicants. I didn't even have all the listed experience. But I had a unique background that set me apart and killed it during the interviews.
