They don't just dump you. People in this topic Jesus. You pick what job you want. If you are dumb and score badly on the ASVAB, cook is probably what you get

And yes it is honestly. But drones on Internet forum thinks enlisting makes you a sheep that kills people and gets PTSD

I enlisted at 18 and I'm now serving my last month. Just from deploying once I ended up winning out in life.
Got decent money saved from it
Benefits
All my school is paid for and every month I'm in school I get a nice 1,200 too.
I got extra points in my police testing so I got placed way higher too.
Looks good on my resume

Maybe. I spoke to a Navy recruiter a couple months ago. He didn't seem to think my age would be much of an issue, except I'm too old to enter the nuclear program.

He ha some take a practice aptitude test and apparently I did well enough that he really wants me to join. I think I scored a 68? I don't remember exactly, but I'd probably do better if I actually prepare for the real one.

I was in the military, it was awful. If you feel like you should have your independence taken from you, and constantly feel like someones bitch, then go ahead.

I remember being a grown ass man at 25, doing pushups in a hallway, because someone left a turd in the community bathroom in the barracks.

Just get a loan, a job, and go to school.

As I mentioned, I want to go into the Navy, but I haven't been able to decide on what kind of role I want to fill. I'm thinking something with electrical work or logistics. Part of me wants to become a helicopter pilot though.

There are three main routes for the average mid-to-low income American out of high school:

1) College. The faster you finish, the faster you can utilize degree.
2) Military. Freedom turns into duty, but with great incentives.
3) Work. Get right into making money, hopefully using a marketable trade skill.

College leads into work or military, but it will make each path that much easier with a degree.

Military can seem daunting due to the fact you're locked in and have to follow rules, but it's the "safest" path.

Work gives you the most freedom, but it's the riskiest of all.

Eh, I don't know about "best" as whether or not someone will enjoy the military is heavily reliant on the individual.

I know when I was 18 for example, despite being lower class with no college prospects, despite my dad and step-mom being in the Navy, I had *zero* fucking interest in ever being involved with the military.

I'm 33 now, still as jobless and devoid of an education today as I was back then, but I don't regret my decision to avoid enlistment in the slightest because I *know* I would have abhorred the experience and come out worst off then I am now in the long-run.

18 yrs old. Outta high school. We often think of short term but what about long term??

Technically you can enlist 18...Retire 38.
Usually ONLY successful entrepreneurs have that luxury.

Imagine retiring under 40 years old. Howd you maximize the retirement benefit?hmm..

Enlist 18.
Work on bachelors degree while serving
Become NCO
Graduate.
Earn commission as officer
Retire as major or better before 40.

Of course if you still need to work for your family, youd work. But for another 20 yrs you might be able to retire twice...

Then again this route is of course dependant on the individual and everyones different. Still challenging enough to do to keep you on your toes as you age and all.

I already knew I was gonna graduate so I was going out to parties and drinking more and didn't care about college at that time.
