For as influential as it is, Treasure Island is really boring, except the beginning and end.
RLS does this great job of making the island seem like this really cool and mysterious place. And the Flint lore was fantastic. I could never get into A Tale of Two Cities because of the coincidental twins.

I'll defend Pride and Prejudice. Reading it as an adult with a better understanding on the place and time it was written and a better ear for the narrative sarcasm has me thinking it's probably widely responsible for the evolution of the novel as a critically rich self aware artform going into the next century.
Reading in in high school though was wasted on me. I'm defending the Count of Monte Cristo, too. What the fuck? I wouldn't say avoid it, but just keep in mind that Catcher in the Rye is an amazingly well-written book about an annoying douchebag.
