Shield gives you extra item and armor slots as well as extra defense. The strength buff from the sword become negligible once you get better keyblades. Staff should just stay neutral.

From a completionist standpoint...

Pick the staff if you prefer having the max amount of MP end game.

Likewise pick the shield if you prefer having the max amount of item slots end game.

I go with dead of night. You level up slow in the beginning but faster near the end. It makes endgame grinding way easier. I would recommend midday for a first timer though. You'll have steady exp gain through the entire game

I'm almost certain the shield only gives you extra item slots, not extra equipment slots.

I went with staff for maximum magic. You can find and create items to increase your attack and defense if you want or need to, but there aren't any items to increase your magic. I think I gave up the sword.

I'm pretty sure you get an extra armor slot, but it's been a while since I played KH1. The item slots alone make it worth it though, and the defense boost plus learning Guard early game make the shield the best pick, especially on proud mode

When he throws the ball at you you can whack it with the sword to knock it back at him for damage. You'll also get experience for doing that

Edit: sword, not keyblade. You don't have that yet lol

There is a missable Trinity Limit but not sure if that was fixed in the Final Mix version.

Anyway there isn't much to miss on the island. There's a chest with what I believe is a protect chain hidden in an alcove but it's not a big deal

KH1 is honestly kinda rough. There was no end to the irritation in certain worlds and they had a lot of areas that are just mazes where every screen is ugly and looks the same.

Still worth playing, make no mistake. But it's not without problems, is what I'm saying.

Off the top of my head, you can only do the race before you leave the island.

I dunno what it is but everytime I play though I practice the race like ten times and win every time but then lose when you race for real.

People complain about KH1, but honestly, I love it way more than 2. 2 tried to add WAY too much gimmicky shit into the gameplay. KH1 was simple but super enjoyable.

Also, picking wand/ditching sword 4 lyfe.

Beat Wonderland, and did some of the colosseum now and managed to beat Cloud on my first try lol

It's fun but these worlds are short and the combat is still just mash X and the occasional dodge roll >_>

Vanilla KH1's staff option was terrible, which is why they buffed it so much in FM.

Sword if you want to game to be more fun, shield if you want it to be easier, either way drop the staff and whatever you do, don't drop the shield.
