The ending of 999 when it all clicked is maybe the most satisfying moment in gaming for me I can recall in the last decade.

999 was a fantastic game. Virtue's Last Reward is also fantastic. Zero Time Dilemma wasn't bad like people say but you should decide for yourself. Either way, the Zero Escape trilogy was a great ride.

Subtle thing no one seems to notice: remember how all the deaths are narrated in an incredibly gruesome, sadistic way, almost reveling in it? It's because it's from the point of view of Akane/Zero, finally getting her revenge on the Cradle Pharmaceutical execs, of course she's going to savor the moment for a bit.

I played that game for a bit. Got frustrated that there were some clear inconsistencies in the world and rules of the game. Quit playing.

Visual Novels just aren't my thing.

If you get the true ending a lot of things make a lot more sense and it all clicks together.

There are a metric shitload of twists that generally are foreshadowed.

Right. I knew going in that there was some bigger story than what I was presented with initially, but the few times it was me playing I never felt like the rules were consistent. Like, the rules of what I could or could not do. And at that point I was like "what's the point of this being a game? Just turn it into a manga or something and save the time and money of thousands of people"

Then yeah, VNs really aren't your thing, I guess. They can go into exposition and internal monologue a bit more than manga and if you played the DS version of 999, it makes excellent use of the dual screens.

I remember getting into the story of 999, except I hated the actual gameplay parts. If it was just a visual novel, I'd've enjoyed it more.

This is the most tragic thing about Akane. She's constantly shown to have become twisted with revenge and hatred throughout 999, that she's always a lot more clever than she lets on. She's even a significant presence in VLR despite short screen time.

So what. the. fuck. was with the portrayal of her in ZTD? Like what the freaking fuck?

who phi is (big woop as it mainly a shoehorn)
who the leader of the cult is, and his motivations
why people started studying the morphogentic field, and it was a stupid answer being because alien magic sent this dude into the past

And the whole point of the bluebird. Yes alien stuff was disappointing but also stuff that exists in theories I've seen so yeah, the game was always based on weird creepy theories

It's a VN with puzzles, not a puzzle game with a story. Try "The Room" and its sequel on Steam (no connection to the movie with Tommy Wiseau) if you want the latter. I haven't actually played them yet (they're on my backlog) but they look pretty solid.

The epilogues are alright. And really, it's worth it for Diana/Sigma/Phi team's story alone. But probably get it at a discount..

I always remember that scene to be a lot cooler than it actually was. Maybe it's due to being so used to the painfully slow pace of the entire thing
