The way the series works, they all have connections to each other, but there are multiple "arcs" that can be understood on their own (kind of like the ways some Dragon Quest games are connected). There is an arc of two games in between Sky and Cold Steel that remains unreleased in English, but again, knowing what happened there isn't crucial to playing Cold Steel.

There's also an arc on PSP before Trails in the Sky but those games are so poorly translated you may as well not bother

The Crossbell games aren't really necessary for Cold Steel 1 and most of Cold Steel 2 other than a few things that happen near the end, but I guarantee they will be for Cold Steel 3

You can start with either Trails in the Sky or Trails of Cold Steel. Technically Trails in the Sky would be the ideal start point but either can work as an entry point.

Think of Sky as one arc and Cold Steel as another. Cold Steel takes place after Sky so there are definitely callbacks and references there, but it's not necessary to understand what's going on.

If you're asking about Legend of Heroes this is a thing. But based on your post I think you're asking about Trails/Kiseki specifically. Trails in the Sky (and SC and 3rd) is technically Legend of Heroes VI. But... don't worry about this, really. It has no connection to the earlier games (probably. again don't worry about this.)
