Long story short the police chief of New Orleans was shot to death in 1890. While he was dying he accused the Italian mob of assassinating him for pursuing cases against them. When the chief died a bunch of Italian people were arrested including Italian mob figures in the city.

The prosecution couldn't get a conviction and the local press printed stories saying the juries were being coerced and/or bribed and thousands people stormed the jail and 19 Italians were dragged out of their cells and killed in the street with several being hanged from street lamps or trees outside the prison,

At this point it is impossible to determine which of the people lynched were in the mafia and which were just random Italians that were just rounded up to satisfy communal outrage.

is there some kind of source for this? because the Italian Mafia had practically no power in America until prohibition which wouldn't happen for about 30 years after this event.

Also 20 people were lynched during the Salem Witch Trials.

Fair enough, we were just focusing on US history at the moment.

If you're tried and convicted, it's an execution. Literally Salem Witch Trials. It may have been barbaric rulings, but technically they were convicted of crimes.

These Italians were not convicted, the frustrated people took matters into their own hands.

Salem witches were tried and convicted in kangaroo court. it's not fundamentally different from lynching.

Why would I need a source on this? It is a known historical event from 120 years ago. If you google "largest mass lynching in us history". All the results point to this event. Why would you bother to even ask for a source without popping in a Google search? It's like someone pointing out the queen of England is still on Canadian money and you being baffled amd demanding a source for this "news" to you.

It isn't breaking news. It is. It was. It has been for over 100 years,

I admitted that it was barbaric. But they didn't drag then onto the streets and hang them. They did at least try them.

This was also technically before the U.S. existed so it's not really part of U.S. history
