I'd really prefer to get 65" but the specific model I'm looking at is 55" and I'm wondering if from a reasonable distance in a medium sized room if 55" is even enough to really make 4k noticable. The current TV I have in here is 55" and 1080p but it's a mid range model going on 8 years old so I really need an upgrade. Is 55' enough for 4k or should I hold out for a bigger model?

Bigger is better. With 4k you need almost 4x the size at he same distance as 1080p to see the difference. There is a chart around somewhere that shows the optimum distance for size.

According to an online calculator I used, 4k at 55" is ideal between 5.5ft - 8.7ft so in a medium sized room that might be good.

Nope

What should I go for then? 65"? More?

HDR is actually one of the main reasons for going with the one I am. The picture quality, and specifically HDR quality is the highest rated in the class and within my budget from all the reviews I've looked at.

I'm terrible at guessing measurements..I could get the tape measurer out and check but I think I might be right around the north end of that range.

My 50" is about 6 ft away and perfect size so if you're further away the 55" should be good

You could measure the distance to be sure and then go to a local store and try to take at one in person to gauge it. I imagine it's a bit different for some people as well.

I mean you have a place for a new 55" TV and you are happy with that size. I'm happy with my 32" 720p Samsung and am waiting for the 1080p to drop in price and I will drop it in place of the 720p.

65" at 5-6 feet away is good right? That's what I'm at. I didn't even know this distance thing was a thing

Well it is just like in speakers why get big speakers if they are 10 feet away?

Honestly if you're getting a 4k it should be at least 60 inches.

Honestly I'd go with a 4k projector if you can. They're aroun 1-2 thousand but even the cheaper ones will give you like 100"

That's way too big for sitting that close. Should be more like 45"-50".

The screen shouldn't be so big in your field of vision that you have to dart your eyes around the screen.

I don't think I really have enough space and proper lighting conditions in this room for a projector unfortunately. I'll look around a bit more and just see what other TV's seem good and fit my budget and everything. Honestly I'd be too tempted to go for an OLED at the higher price range. And aren't projectors kind of in an early transition phase to laser projectors or something now that are supposedly much better than traditional ones but also in their infancy so have kinks to be worked out or something? I don't really know much about projectors.

Lol yeah, it won't be a bad TV or anything by any means but I'll probably be keeping this one roughly as long as my last so I want to try to get the best that's available to me right now within my price range to hopefully have that same longevity. And that TV still isn't going out of commission in my house, it will just no longer be the primary TV. I'll probably end up getting 15+ years out of it at this rate.

Anything in 1080p or higher is going to have more than enough lumens to be clearly visible lights on or off.

Here's a good Sony one in a fully lit room.
