I think that was only there so the masses would understand GotG2 was only a few months after the first and not in the year of release like most of the MCU.

Which I'm pretty sure is entirely due to them wanting to keep Groot as a baby.

Guys, I'm so excited.

This is going to be the worst Labor Day box office in years. The predictions are, of course, that this weekend can't even reach the lows of last weekend.

It's going to be fantastic.

If I am reading the Box Office Mojo chart correctly it looks like Wonder Woman started playing in a lot more theatres a little more than a week ago. This naturally increased the amount of money it was earning per day. Was there any particular reason that happened?

How long has WW been playing in comparison to some of the movies it's passing?

It's starting to feel kind of unimpressive since it feels like they're keeping it in theaters as long as they possibly can just for this reason.

Eh, the biggest jump Titanic had was from 400 theaters to 800 theaters, and it really only did it once

WW went from 800 theaters to 2200.

Though even if Titanic did it to that amount, should I feel it's any less cheap? >_>

1. Saturation level releases play in over 4000 theaters
2. Screens are an important factor. Major releases will play on multiple screens at every theater. Something like WW at this point assumably would not.

Looks like the drought in both tentpole quality and box office is going to end this weekend with It, which is getting great reviews and is looking to have the best horror opening ever by a very long way.

The current record holder is Hannibal with $58m, Paranormal Activity 3 if we discount that with $52.5. It should be well over $70m.

Looking forward to it (har har) too since the film looks really good!

This weekend will probably be a record opening in the horror department for It. Unfortunately, I really don't follow horror films at all. I'll post numbers when I see them. We already have an All-Purpose Horror Thread on the board, so I likely won't comment to much on this aside from numbers.

As for other movies this weekend, there aren't any. It was smart enough to release after the worst summer month in 20 years.

Well part of what makes it so impressive is that it's not behaving like a horror film. There was a very good hold from the Thursday night previews and it is getting an audience that doesn't usually see horror movies. This makes sense considering the nature of the film.

I can't disagree more! Really strange to dismiss the film which is not only ending the mainstream release drought but also one of the most exceptional box office stories of the year. It now looks like it might challenge Deadpool. The previous horror record holder didn't do half that!

Incidentally I think the fact that Hannibal was the previous record holder also shows how horror films that have appeal outside the genre can perform much better. Apparently around 45% of It's presales were to non-horror fans too. That being the count that most heavily skews to genre fans.

Regarding the horror elements thing - how stringent are you? Does Jurassic Park count? Seems like a strange thing to discount given how widespread they are.

Yea dismissing a movie in a thread about general box office happenings just because you happen to dislike the genre is kinda lame and goes against the point of this topic. Like if it ended up flopping horribly sure, but this is actually doing stuff.

Now I don't think it'll actually beat Deadpool for best rated R opening which had something like $132 million I think? But it'll easily take 2nd with somewhere in the $100 million range which is still pretty crazy

Dunno. It made 54 million opening night i think... but i think ironically driveins are gonna eat into a lot of the box office because drive ins have been adding 2 or 3 showings due to selling out at every one around here. Apparently watching a horror movie at a drive in during fall time is a big hit. Go figure.

I think you are misunderstanding the fact that I'm dismissing it personally. I'm not dismissing it objectively. There are a ton of horror fans on the board, so I don't have to pay attention to a genre I find distasteful. As you can see, other people are happy to post the numbers well before I would on any given day. Just like other people on the board don't care about superhero films and don't post about them, I don't have to post about horror films. It's not like I am a curator of this thread.

The previous horror record holder didn't do half that!

It is a beloved book that has never had a theatrical film release and had strong word of mouth thanks to well-made trailers. It released one month after virtually anything that mattered. Comparing this movie to Hannibal is a little bit incorrect. The genre itself doesn't matter. If you want me to give an actual opinion on this success, I would compare it to Gone with the Wind or Ben-Hur. What matters here is the fact that we're dealing with an adaptation of what is considered a popular modern classic. Critically lauded, highly anticipated, well-made trailer and most importantly, a book.

It's interesting that people are leaping to disagree with me disliking horror. I don't understand why I have to care about the box office happenings of every damn film. Even successful ones. It's not even ignorant of me; I'll watch It, likely when it leaves theaters and shows up on some streaming service somewhere. I just detest horror films.

I have been posting the numbers every day, and I would have posted them today too. I posted the Annabelle 2 numbers! Just other people beat me to it. I don't run the thread or anything! People just assumed that I would care deeply about a film's success. I guess there's some truth to that, in that once it cracks the Top 100 (domestically, because world numbers are still an evolving and skewed beast), I will start chronicling its ranking dutifully because I love to track the climb.

I should say this - I'm happy to discuss It and why it's successful. I have no interest in the film and am not going to actively go out of my way to care about its success.
