Current Events > In Marvel comics, how have they ever managed to repel Galactus?

Thought of this while playing UMvC3.

I don't read Marvel comics so my knowledge isn't great, but my understanding is that Galactus is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe, if not THE most powerful. And I know the threat of Galactus eating Earth is a common plot.

So... how have they ever managed to repel him? How has Earth survived so long from Galactus? Or is my understanding just completely off?

Galactus' main super power is Super-jobbing. He's not only super-good at getting his ass kicked by weak heroes, when he finally does get his ass kicked, Abraxas comes out and makes everyone really really sorry they beat up Galactus.

First time they stole an all powerful weapon from him to chase him off. Him coming to devour earth isn't that common as he vowed not to try going forward (he's usually go after other inhabited planets established in other books like ROM and Thor), but the threat is there. One point he was pointed to the negative zone and a lot of uninhabited planets, another he'd been so weakened by some failures the FF and Avengers actually managed to beat him and almost killed him (Reed Richards saved his life). Still when he is beaten by lower force it's usually by outsmarting him. Once his energy draining machines were tampered with to kill him (as dead as anyone gets in comics as he came back later), another he was just teleported away.

I recall seeing a scan where Galactus was scared shitless of Molecule Man. MM was being super casual and Galactus was trying to be as cautious as can be while talking to him, constantly telling himself "He can kill you with a thought."

Digging that up would be no easy task since it was a highly active forum I saw it on.

It's from the Ultimates (2015). From like earlier 2016. Basically the Ultimates go out to try and dismantle the Doomlocks affecting the timeline and end up cutting a hole outside the multiverse.

There they encounter Galactus, who returns them to their own homes. But before returning to his business Galactus is approached by Infinite who takes him to that conversation with Molecule Man and discovers that the universe has undergone recent reconstruction and that there are still vestiges of the old Marvel Universe trying to assert itself in the new world. One of those vestiges is Thanos, who uses this hole the Ultimates made to escape from oblivion to Earth in search of a new cosmic cube. Oops.

Yeah Galactus isn't that powerful in the scheme of things. Thanos for example, with the infinity gauntlet, literally destroyed the marvel universe minus Adam warlock.

A lot of things aren't as powerful as Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet, that doesn't mean they're not 'powerful in the scheme of things'

Molecule Man is one of the most powerful beings in the entire multiverse though, of course Galactus would be afraid of him. Thanos w/ the Infinity Gauntlet would be afraid of him.
