I'm not trying to be edgy or anything but what's with all these people who are getting some whole new meaning out of their music now? They weren't exactly deep writers or ambiguous or anything. They were all pretty straightforward and in your face because that was their entire style. When you heard songs like Waiting For The End or Given Up, what did you think it meant?
It's not like you need to read between the lines or find any hidden meanings, it was always super obvious. And shit I seem to recall Chester even doing a gun to his head motion when I saw them and they played Given Up. Like they made it pretty obvious... Obviously I understand people saying it'll be harder to listen to _______ now, but I'm seeing a bunch if people acting like they're cracking some code that his suicide was the key for and they're just now figuring out the meaning of their songs. --- The above post is literally and objectively right. ... LMFAO What's with all the edgy basement dwelling losers coming out of the wood, and acting like they have the right to decide what is "good music" and what isn't? I think they were influential in the sense that they got a lot of people interested in music but as far as their actual music was concerned they weren't really all that influencal because they didn't really do anything new, they just took a bunch of things that were already being done and did it their own way and Chester's vocal talent and Mike's production and everything is what made them stand out. And it's not like we're still getting lingers of their style in popular music today considering the genre they started as is dead and the things they did later in their career like adding electronic elements and stuff weren't exactly new or anything. Or things like A Thousand Suns were they tried to make a "deep" album with dense production isn't anything new or interesting. They were all pretty straightforward and in your face because that was their entire style. When you heard songs like Waiting For The End or Given Up, what did you think it meant? Its exactly because of that straightforwardness that its shocking. Because they were largely written off as just an angsty band with no real substance and lyrics to cater to emos and ****. And people were long over it. I, for one, was sure the band was over all the bad/depressive stuff for the most part and were just living their successful lives, people felt it in the music, it wasnt as aggressive anymore and some of it felt like a rehash of old ideas served in a new musical plate, Shinoda stressed in interviews that being angry at 17 and being angry at 37 are different things, ie all those things that pointed out they were just doing their job and largely ok mentally. Then he kills himself. Of course it paints new meaning on everything. Suddenly, it all makes sense, it all falls into place. Maybe he was actually over it, in his recent interviews he said that he made the effort to seek help and think positively and find meaning to life. I believe Cornell's death was the last straw, the last switch that just undid any progress he had made. So in short its not the music that has to be decrypted now that hes gone, its that the context to the music has changed. Also, i think a lot of people, and this is what happened to me too, are starting to realize how greatly they were impacted by their music. Im not talking about die hard fans, but just people who were into them 10-15 years ago then moved on and held them largely as a nostalgia factor. Ive been reading a lot of comments on youtube under their last gig videos which state the same thing. For many, they were the first band to rock music or heavier music in general. You probably just cant erase something that youve been exclusively obsessed with for so long, no matter if it was 10-15 years ago, its just imprinted on your mind. I was still quite a big fan of them before his suicide and would definitely include either HT, Meteora or Reanimation im my top 30 albums, and his death still had that effect of total re-evaluation of their music on me. Now everything seems so much more powerful and impactful than before. His last performance of "One More Light" is now among my most favorite and powerful live performance moments: And thats a new song, definitely wasnt a classic before (although the one i liked the most from the new album, its different and a one off dark track on an otherwise moody but uplifting/light album, and Mike Shinoda acknowledged that). Now i consider it one of the best if not the best song theyve done, and im a huge nu-metal fan thats supposed to like the distorted guitars and the heavy sound more. Thats the effect that im talking about. Its like he inadvertently died for the music. People tell me not to take it close to heart and just enjoy the music which will always be there, but they dont understand that mourning IS a way of appreciating and enjoying it. Hope this clears things out. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah people did the same with Soundgarden's music after Cornell's death. He sang about some pretty heavy shit too. The sad thing is many that suffer from depression like these artists because they can relate to the lyrics but feel like the writer finds a way to keep fighting and pull through. So when these artists ends up dying the way they do it just feels like a battle that they lost, both for the artists and the fans that used their music to cope. Really have a feeling that Cornell's death was just the thing that put Bennington over the edge. I mean they were best friends, he was even the godfather of Cornell's kid (btw, feel really bad for that kid. Loses his father and godfather in the span of just a few months). They were two great friends who probably leaned on each other for support for their issues, and when one left, the other probably just couldn't take it. --- No one sings like you anymore ...
