binged watched the dub of the 2011 version over the past few days. only have 58 eps dubbed. so switched over to the sub for the greed island arc. watched the original series and 2011 before but it's so good i randomly started watching it again.

i hope they eventually do some OVAs of the new material. i still have 13 issues of the manga to read till i'm all caught up on that. hopefully tagoshi can stay healthy and get some semi regular issues coming out. i know a lot of authors get burnt out on having issues come out so often so they should just pace themselves more. i know early on it's not up to them but i'm sure everyone would like him to come out with an issue every 2-3 months instead of him coming out with like 10 issues in a row and then nothing for a couple years.

Did we watch the same show?

Because I don't think we did. You seem confused.

i think you're thinking of a different show. everything is building to the main character gon growing stronger and meeting new people and new areas being added. it's cool where as strong as gon and killua are they're still weak compared to a lot of people.

Is the 90s version the same as the 2011 version? Or similar to Do to DBZ? I've been meaning to watch it what is the best order?

The 2011 version has way less filler, looks better, and actually continues the story after a certain point.

Not saying the 90's version is bad, but you might as well just watch the 2011 one.

Chimera Ant is the best arc though. Yorknew is slightly overrated, I actually enjoyed Greed Island more and of course the Ant arc is one of the best arcs in all of shonen imo.

really? i loved the ant arc. yorknew was great but it was just an introduction. i'm really interested to see more of the spiders.

think of the 99 version as dbz. the 2011 version as dbz kai. same show just not much filler. in 2011 it was 58 episodes to get through yorknew. greed island is the arc i just started. in the normal show i think it was like 90-100 episodes for just the hunter exam, heavens arena and yorknew. then it was OVAs for greed island.

it just has much better pacing and is much more interesting. keeps the action non stop. there's only be 2 filler eps so far that i noticed and those were both recap eps that you can skip.

i feel like every arc got better and better as the show went. only the last arc was lame. the election arc but that was just sadly where the show had to leave off for the time being. i'm super interested in the dark continent that i haven't started reading yet. gonna read what's out soon.

Most fans from my experience agree that Ant arc is best arc, but then there are some who think it peaked at Yorknew.

But him getting physically more powerful isn't really very compelling. Also Kurapika was a painful little snot to suffer through watching.

Well yeah, but it's still 34-35 chapters into the post anime arc.

he stopped in 2012 and i'm assuming that's where the anime left off

he started again in 2016. 24 chapters have been out since the last hiatus. so like a chapter per month. only the last hiatus was real bad. the rest were less then a year or the longest before was still less then 2 years.

it might not be a bad idea for him to get closer to an ending. i'm sure he has the story planned out so it depends on how much longer he wants to go with it. i know there's still a lot to do with the spiders at least.

How can it have better pacing when there was filler and 2011 shortened some of the first arc? Tone is eye of the beholder but 2011 imo became infinitely better when the tower/Yorknew started, and imo 2011 Yorknew>1999 Yorknew.

I'm caught up on the English dub, and it is impressive. I don't see (yet) why it is rated as high as it is on MAL, but it's a great Shonen.

Doesn't match up with something like FMA Brotherhood, but it's still impressive.

gonna take you 2 years to watch the rest if you wait for the dub. is FMA brotherhood really that good? i watched the original show back on adult swim. didn't really get into it. i do know brotherhood is supposed to be better than the original.

It is probably the best Shonen I've ever seen. All the characters and side characters are fully fleshed out, nobody is inherently "more powerful" than the rest of them, characters who should be scary and feared feel that way.

the climax of greed island arc was a volleyball game

the climax of ant arc was a fight, but not a kiddie anime fight, dude literally won using a nuke instead of overpowering his opponent and that didn't even kill his foe, it poisoned him

It circumvents common anime tropes enough to still feel fresh today even though it was largely written a decade+ ago.

I always find that neat.

Compared to Dragon Ball that essentially became trope fodder, HxH executed creatively enough that other manga's simply choose not to follow its lead despite it being a Top 5 manga of all times (Popularity wise).

Anyways, as far as Battle Shounen's go it's top-tier, maybe even the best. People are ruthless and underhanded as a rule of thumb, so you never get the feeling you have to handwave common stupidity like "Calling your attack" or "letting your opponent charge their super attack". The protags are fully willing to trick stronger opponents into an ambush and drop a rock on them instead of fighting head on. Fights are about tactics as much as they are about strength, which means when hype builds it comes from a natural and intriguing place.

Top notch anime, both the original and the 2011. The manga is... Inconsistent, but phenomenal source material.
